1987 D Repunched Mintmark

Hello

Finally received my Cherry Pickers Guide today and picked up a box of pennies to see what I could find. I'm still going through my first roll under the microscope and came across what appears to be a 1987 D repunched mintmark. Can anyone confirm my suspicion based of these photos?

One of the problems with RPM's (and striking in general) on Zinc coated Lincoln's is that the Copper plating will separate at devices from the Zinc leaving what looks like a remnant mint mark or what many confuse as doubling. The bottom right of your mint mark with looks grey is the zinc peeking out and not an RPM.

To add to your cherry pickers guide I would like to suggest Copper coins.com and Varietvista.com if your not already familiar with them already.

    Good luck in your searches,

    WS

If you have the CPG, it clearly shows - and states, the secondary mark to be NORTH of the primary... so the explanation by @WaterSport is a good one. Cheers, RickO

The planchet quality in 1987 wasn't very good. That just adds to the confusion.

I am happy that another is interested in varieties. I have many finds and have made substantial amounts of money from them over the years. All of my scores were Cherrypickers Varieties so I'm glad you got the book. It has photos for comparison to what you may find.

An on line resource you ought it check out is the Coneca site. http://varietyvista.com/CONECA%20Master%20Listings.htm On this site you will find all the Cherrypickers varieties plus many more doubled dies and repunched mint marks. Not as many photos as we all would like, but the verbal descriptions are helpful.

    Good luck hunting.
