The same NGC 1921 proof Peace Dollar that sold on Heritage 04/27/11 lot number 5312 that sold for $20700 is now on APMEX.

Great question ... from the image, I would have guessed a cleaned AU. It looks to have wear on the high points. NGC, of course, has seen it in hand.

Is that the same coin that was on Pawn Stars?

Rick Montgomery at NGC has told me and the late Jack Lee (about our newly-partnered coin :s ) and likely 100 others before and after that NGC will no longer designate "Satin Proof" for 1921's. "Anomalies" is my word, not his.

But the finish is quite distinctively different in fabric from that of coins from normal dies. Not Cleaned

There are fifteen or so very good threads to which @RogerB has already posted where this information is available.
Anyone get a close enough look to see if it's medal press?

I won't argue value, just the cynicism that imagines a 2011 sales price is much of current indicator on any esoteric quasi-iconic issue.

Any 1921 or 1922 Peace dollar that is in a "proof" holder by any TPG or of any time period must be subject to modern examination, analysis and verification. I would not trust any older designation.

Pass! They can’t even take good pics. I think if they did take clear pics it would be more obvious it’s a fake.

Yeah... um... no. It may be a business strike made with dies used on proofs, but it sure doesn't look like what a proof 21 Peace dollar should look like. Hair above the ear should be sharp for starters.

    Too flat struck for proof.

Would everyone who's bought, sold, or had an in-hand inspection of one of these with someone more familiar with this issue please raise your hands.

For the other 99.9% of you yapping :'(

Fake? Counterfeit? Illegitimate? How, why or just predisposed to dyspepsia ?

Misattribution? Not enough drama, I guess :s

Well here is a legit special 21 produced with intent by the mint with the history to proven it. When you compare the fabric to the other the difference are much deeper than finish.

So how much are those Walter Breen letters worth these days?

With all the nonsense that surrounds these and the various 1922 oddities, I’d be hesitant to park much money in one, even one that was clearly legit. And yes, I did have the opportunity to review the former mint directors coins in hand. A couple of them were stunning. Some of the others I didn’t care for.

Give me a nice, well-struck business strike gem 1921 and I’ll be perfectly happy.

I like your coins better Mr. Broadstruck!

NGC Verify Certification web site has it priced at $25,500.00

Well... I cannot produce any information that would support or negate the proof designation. I will say that I have, over the past year, looked at literally hundreds of 1921 Peace Dollars.... and the visible wear I see on that dollar is considerable... that does not preclude a proof of course. For me, that coin would require I evaluate it in hand.... Cheers, RickO

  • Apmex doesn't own the coin...it's consigned to them from a large dealer.

I know everyone knows this but I will post it anyway:
the term Proof refers to a method of manufacture and not what a coin might look like compared to another Mint State example. also, expecting to realistically grade, let alone attribute something like this, from sub-par internet images is unrealistic and unreliable.

with this thread, it might be advisable to swallow hard and admit that the good Colonel might be better informed on this than we are, and trust his assessment accordingly.
