GTG Peace Dollar 1928 ****Grade Posted****

I used to have a complete 24 coins Peace Dollar set. Most of the consisted of MS60-MS63. I have since sold most to obtain a higher quality 10 coin Date Set. Here is my 1928 upgrade. Guess the grade.

    Looks gemmy to me, MS65 or so. Many of these grade well even with significant field activity.

    Edited to add: If it has booming luster and few hairlines it should be high grade though impossible to tell from pics..

    Very nice. But, I'll have to say 63+ (maybe a 64) because of the obv rim at 1:00, rev rim at 8:00, hits on the rev rays, and the hit on the wing. Or am I being too picky?

    If PCGS missed the reverse rim nick: MS66. If not, MS65. Original skin is tough to find on this key date.

    IMO. too picky about the rim. IMO, the coin is not original. I see continuous hairlines = 62 but bump for lack of marks and eye appeal to MS-63.

    A 30K coin would certainly be an upgrade since he is coming from a $400 or so coin in 63 or less.

    When I first looked at it I saw it as a 63. Then after reading the other's observations, I am now in the 64 camp.

    Those of you guessing 65+ and 66 may wish to consider that a 65+ is a $9,000 pop 18 coin and a 66 is a $33,000 pop 17 coin with a single 66+.

    I'm in at a very nice 64, possibly a 64+. I like the coin but I see a couple of things which probably keep it out of gem range. I'd be very happy to be wrong. Luster could possibly carry it - devilishly hard to always see in a photo.

    To @Insider2 who feels the coin is not original, what exactly makes you think that? The coin has outstanding frost which isn't true of many coins that have been played with. I don't see any hairlines.

    The luster is "off" to my mind - more like a dull satin than bright frost. Look at the "cartwheel of light" under the "R" above the eagle. It appears too dull and wide as if a translucent sheet was between the coin and the light to diffuse the luster. Perhaps it is just an effect of a digital image.

    Edit for Wabbit: When there are continuous very fine hairlines on a coin (left obverse field) it changes the appearance of the luster. That's what I'm seeing.

    Difference of opinion I guess. Many Peace dollar issues frequently come with a satiny luster. The 28-P is one of those. Having photographed several hundred of them, the luster looks perfectly fine to me. How luster appears in a photo is almost infinitely variable based on the angle of lighting and the technique used. Quantifying the depth and brilliance of the luster from a single photograph is, in my opinion, impossible.

    IMO, I'll just say often impossible. If it is original, I agree w/the 63 posts. The OP is certainly not going to 'Upgrade" to an AU or "Details" coin. :)

    Nice obverse. Reverse with that big hit on the eagle may limit to 64.

    Another local collector a CPA who I see at the local library. showed me a close relative, a 1927 a few days ago. He bought it as a raw 63, my first impression of that one was better, but on inspection it looked properly graded in his 2x2. Thick luster, original frosty look carries the day.
