APMEX would seem an unlikely place to find some choice US coins.

I was browsing some listings at eBay this morning and followed a link to here at APMEX, https://ebay.com/sch/Other-US-Coins/786/m.html?item=112616089129&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT&_ssn=apmex, which seems like the last place I would look to find these coins for sale. I can only imagine that they are consignments and I haven't considered if the prices are high/low. It just struck me as odd to think that they sell coins.
Did you know this?? Have you bought any Numismatic items from them??

I bought one numismatic coin from them. It was something I had been hunting for a long time. The coin wasn’t horrible but let’s just say financially it was a better deal for them than me. One of those educational experiences we all have.
Recent thread on this very subject. Had some good observations. Middle of Page 5 right now.
I found some just don't have the quality for the grade and price. JMO.
I, like quite a few people have been burned by their use the stock photos. I was able to get a full refund, but the practice bothers me, because they don’t specifically state when the coin you’re looking at is a stock photo. I understand they can’t image every MS65 Morgan dollar but when buying something like a MS64 Lafayette or a proof seated half you’d think you’re getting the coin shown in the photo. Often with Apmex that’s not the case.
I would hand it to them for having more active buy/sell spreads online than other operations. They don't pay strong for numismatics but they probably buy big collections from time to time and are able to sell at significant profit. Huge overhead.
I bought a coin from them a while ago. It was certified and the easiest thing to do is check the cert number in the picture with the cert number in the details. At least I was able to do it...but it wasn't a coin you would use a stock photo on either!
Choice US coins? I don't know?
I have done quite a bit of business with them over the years, mainly on pre 33 's double eagles with "low" premiums. I am both a buyer and seller depending on what I need to balance my inventory.
Their buy/ sell spreads are probably the most reasonable in the business. I am mainly buying/selling bullion proxies so eye appeal is secondary to price.
The above, if correct, describes a violation of ANA member regulations. Complain to ANA, ASAP.
kiyote, it would be simple enough to contact them and get images of the EXACT coin you are going to buy. too often collectors in situations like this think they'll strike gold and when they don't it's always the sellers fault. and if they won't provide the pictures, either pass or get a return guarantee, but don't blame the seller, take a little personal responsibility.
I bought a from them no problem great coins with fast shipping.
+1 I have as well!
not to sound like I'm defending APMEX, but if I follow the link in the OP it is clear when a stock photo is used --- that would be all the listings where there is more than one of the listed "items" for sale. otherwise, the item pictured seems like it would be the one you'll be receiving.
I've bought coins from them since early 2000. They have shut down their non bullion department a couple times wanting to get away from that stuff. Within a short period of time it always came back.
I purchased one coin from Apmex.... it was a stock photo.... the coin was OK for the purpose I bought it. Cheers, RickO
I sold them some coins last year at FUN. I can guarantee they were top notch coins in PCGS holders. They also paid more than anyone else.
Rule of thumb here is that you take a picture of the worst of the coins so that whomever gets that one, is not disappointed and the others are happy the coin is better then the picture. If that is not the case here I would avoid buying it from them.
Best place to buy !

Yes. Have seen their stuff on eBay and on their website for a number of years now.
Free advertisement beats spam every time.

It seems as though if you buy their better coins, you get what you pay for. But it appears there is a very fuzzy line drawn between the raw cleaned pre-1933 gold coins and the raw XF pre-1933 gold coins. The cleaned sometimes spill UP into the XF, but not the other way around.
Overall, I think they're pretty square.
Cheers

I had an amazon gift card one time and I bought a coin from them there with it. It was a pretty nice coin but I wayyyyyy overpaid. I was new at the time and thought it might be a bit overpriced but nothing too bad and had the gift card so wasn't too worried. I paid $220 or so and I know now it's realistically a $130 coin.
How big of an operation is AMPEX?
Their non bullion coins seem to be way overpriced.
Okay I found out why we are seeing some nice coin being sold with them. Looks like they are loaning $$$ to dealers and they are giving there coins up as collateral if they don't pay back the lone or the interest they get the coins or they can sell them out right looks like we have a new buyer in town, seller as well of graded coins not just bullion anymore.
Hoard the keys.
