Counterfeit Morgan dollar on eBay?
![astrorat](https://us.v-cdn.net/6027503/uploads/userpics/036/nBQT4OEZ3DG7T.jpg)
Hi folks,
I picked up a couple of proof Buffalo silver rounds from this seller and they turned out to be counterfeit (weight = 24.5 grams). I have not yet measured the specific gravity.
Take a look at his Morgan dollar and report it, if you think it's counterfeit.

Is that the Elvis Lip variety?
Cheers

The 1888-S in your first post is one hundred percent counterfeit. The date is incorrect and the strike details are not correct, either.
The Morgan, as stated above, is counterfeit.... the buffalo rounds are just rounds, (and ugly at that) unless they are not silver.... cannot tell that from pictures. Cheers, RickO
The Buffalo rounds weigh 24.5 grams ... so they are definitely counterfeit.
Looks like the Morgan sold ... and the seller has not taken down his other Buffalo rounds.

I posted above that: "Can go either way. Image not good enough. Gun to my head I say its OK."
Thanks for the image Arizona, I now have a hole in my head to go with several others. LOL.
All this stuff is gonna scare people away from collecting.
Pete
This stuff has been around for many years. All a potential collector has to do is have patience and learn before making excessive purchases without know what is being bought. There are plenty of resource around so people do not get burned. People like those in the OPs original post prey on the uneducated.
Gone.
If your looking to buy old US morgan dollars. I go with the saying. Buy American. Support your local economy.

Is the ANA doing anything? Is the ANA filing complaints against sellers of counterfeit coins and medals?
Nope.
what is even worse with the Silver rounds is the ones with COPY on the back. UGGLY. I don't mind Silver Bars and rounds but if your going to make a Buffalo type it should not be so close that you must print COPY on it. Change it so no confusion. I refuse to buy a anything with the Word COPY on it. Its just say CHEAP in my mind. CHEAP CHEAP and UGLY

So how does one tell if a Morgan is counterfeit or real? I purchase one of these from China, based on the price I am guessing it is counterfeit. I looks pretty real to me. I do not have the coin on my person but will post pictures once I get home. Is it really cost effective to counterfeit Morgan dollars?
Nearly anything you purchase direct from China will be fake - coins, clothing, perfume, aircraft parts, underwear -- anything.
It's an educational process. The really bad counterfeits get the dates, mintmark, and design elements all wrong. For example, the 1842 Morgan dollar with the reverse of a Seated Liberty dollar.
Weight, dimensions, and composition are other clues. Know the proper diagnostics. Weight and dimensions are easy. Composition is more difficult, but still easy. You can use an electronic device (e.g. Sigma Metalytics) or you can go "old school" and do specific gravity (lots of youtube videos on SG).
Buy books, attend seminars, listen to experienced collectors ... consume knowledge and you will be fine. There is no easy or quick way.
Thanks for the PM, BTW.

You have broken several laws concerning counterfeit US coins. Importing them to the US is against the law. Do not attempt to sell one as that is also illegal. Ebay does not allow for selling of counterfeit or replica coins on their site (the OP here).
