Looking for guidance regarding a rare Mercury Dime

Hello,

Over 10 years ago I inherited my grandfather's mercury dime collection. It's an awesome memento and has led to me dabbling in collecting coins ever since. Within this collection is one "crown jewel", a 1927-S that is Uncirculated and in immaculate condition. Based on my short time learning about grading, more specifically in the context of Mercury Dimes, I would expect this coin to grade at MS64 or higher and it very clearly has Full Split-Bands. Is it worth it to grade this coin (I think this is a yes but just want to hear opinions)? Also, if I do pursue getting this coin graded, should I go with a particular grader. My final question is, what are the pros/cons of self-submitting versus using a dealer.

Thanks in Advance for your time and attention!

Best,

Justin

@JRoc26..... Welcome aboard.... Yes, get it graded, Yes by PCGS.... Why not join and send it (and maybe others ) in yourself..... Cheers, RickO

  • Heres some photos, sorry for the quality (or lack thereof)...this was the best I could do with my phone at the time. I'll look for opportunities to get better pictures in the future.

the surfaces may be altered - find a local coin dealer or go to a coin show to get a grade opinion (by them seeing it in hand) before sending to PCGS

That is not Unc and I don't think it will grade, If you can get your $$$ back do so.
A big welcome to you sorry it was not better news for that coin.> @JRoc26 said:

I agree with the others above. Looks like the surfaces have been messed with in some way and does not look uncirculated.

Seriously? You want him to return the coin to his deceased grandfather?

It's a keepsake...........those are worth more than Gold (or Latinum) to some people. It would only be normal to want to know something about it.

    looks cleaned to me. sorry.

It has the prototypical look of having been cleaned with baking soda or something similar. Methods such as that were quite common 40-60 years ago and many silver coins were dumped into kitchen sinks and washed. Unfortunately, their surfaces typically became dull or lifeless and most coins were beaten up with characteristic, fine scratches.

It's a better date coin in a higher grade that you obtained from your grandfather so it has tremendous value to you that is far in excess of what the market might value the coin.

This, but looks altered. Very common in the good old days to buy an "unc" that was messed with. I sure did as a YN.

Probably as a cleaned or a.s. coin, it would be worth good money as a rare coin. Graded by PCGS as AU details cleaned or MS with true view images it may tell a strong buyer everything they want to know. Also with Anacs and ICG they do AU58 details which may add value.
