Ancient coins and more so the study of history.
Yes, it is all of these things and I might add an appreciation of art and history with intrinsic precious metal value. Allso rarity both conditional and absolute. It gives me pleasure, keeps me occupied and is a quasi investment. If nothing else, it is a good place to store money and not splurge it all away, as some other pastimes will.

I prefer oldmismatics. I do not collect modern coins.
In some ways it’s like otorhinolaryngology, prosthodontics, Worcestershire sauce, and Terpsichore.
"Numismatics" is the sudden realization that you learned smoething from collecting coins.
Numismatics is what happens when an enjoyable hobby becomes a serious study of metal disks. I also enjoy it from the perspective that I have something of retained value.... as opposed to another pastime of mine - turning wine into urine.
