New purchases, favorite pieces, images you found online that make your eyes bug out and heart skip a beat.

Was stashing the proof libertad in the vault yesterday and the makings of this image occurred to me.

@Weiss, I always like seeing non restrike years of 50 Pesos, and in a full gasket holder too? Who was getting these graded back then? That’s a holder from before PCGS was grading foreign, right? Of coarse, I could be wrong

Well not before they were grading foreign, because this is a foreign coin, and PCGS graded it :)

I got this one about 10 years ago from Northern Nevada Coin. They've always promoted classic Mexican gold--especially the 50 pesos. At the time I had to really stretch to afford this one. Looked over their selection for days. Finally decided on this 1930, because it's one of the lowest mintages of the series and because they said it was semi-prooflike. They were right :)

@Weiss, this is piquing my interest. I too bought a 50 peso but from Northeast Numismatics. My records show I bought in 2010 at 1600 gold, paid 200 over at the time, so not fairing as well as you, but at the time, PCGS graded Mexican gold just wasn’t available. I took a shot. Still love the coin.
I just remember at the time, I couldn’t submit foreign coins to PCGS and a quick search shows they started offering the service in 2012-13? I don’t know. I’m thinking this was a dealer promotion of some kind? Testing the market??

Oh, I just remember wanting a big gold coin so bad!! I collect Mexico coins, mostly copper issues, but this was the big one on my list! Graded and slabbed was a bonus and I still believe this market has lots of room to grow, if not, I do not care, it’s such a great design.

    @ricko
The series has such a neat depiction of the eagle and snake over cactus. Looks great in copper.

But the 50 Peso shows this in all its glory in a nice disk of gold!! Not only is the obv killer with great imagery and meaning, the reverse doesn’t disappoint

I will add that I consider 1947 restrikes bullion, not so much for the original issue dates, although the premiums for these are actually low enough to be considered either numismatic/bullion. I prefer the early dates, I’ve seen several rolls of restrikes, but wouldn't rule them out to spice up ones holdings.

So did you pay $1800 or $2120??

I believe the 50 peso is 1.2 oz not 1 oz so at $1300 gold it would melt at $1560 so $1800 isn't so bad for a graded PCGS MS64 IMHO,,,,,, $2120 not so good,,,,,

Thanks, I paid 1810.00. I meant 200 over melt for the piece. Which melted at around 1600 at the time. 1400 Oz ish gold at the time? Off the top of my head.

I think that’s still a high premium, but in line with saints in 4 and proof buffalos etc for what you get in one of these. Now I’m not saying I’d have several, but one nice one I’m ok with spending a little more premium on the gold. This for me would be hard to part with in a crunch unlike an Eagle or a KRand.

Selling wise, I’m sidelined until spot climbes again, but that’s the same for any pieces bought at that level.

Love the big Mexican gold. The reason I bought that Peruvian 100 Sol last month is because at 1.354 AGW, it's even bigger than the 50 peso's 1.205 :o

Yep, that design in copper looks fantastic, too. Bold and powerful.

More of the Mexican eagle design in gold, showing slight variations over the years.

    1900 One Peso

    1917 20 Peso

1852 8 Escudo (piece of eight)

And some of the design in silver, too:

Nah, these all fit into a standard larger size safe deposit box.

Forgot one that I really like--this one previously from my box of 20:

@asheland , cool bar. One of the earliest of my PM purchases where I actually realized bullion could be collectible was when my favorite B&M got a handful of one ounce South East Refining bars. Bought them all. Most are sequential. Nearly 10 years later, at another shop here in town, I found one single bar--and it was the very next serial number :o

One bar exhibits a dropped digit in the serial number. Thought that was a cool striking error you don't often see...
