Interesting newspaper ad with shield nickel image.

This advertisement appeared in the Daily Arkansas Gazette of April 7, 1891, p.3. Note use of a nickel reverse design that had been obsolete for eight years.

Pretty cool, and I imagine they simply had the line drawing on hand (rather than preparing any new art.)
Reminds me of magazine ads in the 50's that showed a representation of change that would be in circulation at the time. Often included a Mercury dime, or a Buffalo nickel perhaps, both well past their last dates of issue.
Strange system, why not just deposit 5 cents 20 times?

I imagine this had something to do with wanting to use a big "5" graphic instead of a "V".
Edit: Would something similar today exist that would use the eagle reverse of the quarter or the Lincoln Memorial reverse on the cent, out of production for 19 and 9 years, respectively?

No way would they continue with something that cut into profits... and a nickel was much more important then....heck, when I was a kid, that was FIVE PENNY CANDIES!! Or a full size candy bar. Two nickels for a comic book.... Cheers, RickO
