Fellas, leave the tight pants to the ladies. If I can count the coins in your pockets you better use them to call a tailor. Stay thirsty my friends......

At 14,500, that set will never be opened for the world to see. The value is in the uniqueness and intrigue.

The stuff dreams are made of..

I remember seeing the sets Leo Freese was showing at the '15 Portland Ana. I really enjoyed them for what they are - gifts from those before us

Very cool ... very expensive ... but if I won the PowerBall, I'd buy it and open it on video.

Cool but not something that I would buy at that competitive price level.

Would love to see what's in there, though.

Not a true "mint set." Simply a group of coins ordered by an individual. Might contain any combination of pieces. Certainly interesting, but not $14kk interesting.

    But yours is opened!

Yeah... I would never be able to keep it sealed.... Just have to open these things... I am way too inquisitive to keep anything sealed for long.... Cheers, RickO

The 1945 set is not opened. This lot contains some 1944 coins from an opened set.

I am almost certain that there are 2 of each coin, Roger, and not just miscellaneous coins.

without knowing what the person ordered, the content must remain unknown. People could purchase silver dollars in the same manner, and any combination of subsidiary and minor coins, so long as they remained within the specified limits.

I think the group Julian has available is a much better acquisition target....the buyer is not buying a "goat in a poke."

    what 'shagnasty said.

this is sort of reminiscent of past eBay auctions for sealed GSA Dollars that would get to $500-$600. I doubt they were opened when you consider that a generic date would be a $180 coin back then, around 2004-5. there's no way, even with Julian's $6k set that the money can be recouped, it's all in that little lead seal!!

one thing a set like this does do is solve some of the mystery about what the Mint mailed coins in. the riddle still isn't solved about the 1936-42 Proof Set packaging. they certainly weren't mailed in bags, why are no intact sets that are sealed like this ever offered??

thanks for posting this one, Mark. :)

So, how does one know what is in the bag?

The price of gold is set by faith, or lack of, in the currency it is priced in.
