1851 $2 1/2 gold, outstanding repunched date
A client brought me this coin to sell. In the process of trying to authenticate it, I noticed the date. As a Morgan VAM enthusiast, this was a fun find, regardless of rarity. Of course, I tried to research the variety, but I found nothing like it on that date/mint for the issue.
I thought it was authentic. A handful of other dealers agreed, but I sent it off anyway. It has just posted as AU details.
Has anyone ever seen this variety or stage on the 1851 $2 1/2 gold? If this variety is well-known and I have simply done a subpar job in my research, I apologize for this post. But, in that case, enjoy the image anyway.
Thanks!

I've had several of these, and 1851-O as well. Did you send it to PCGS? Did they notate the doubling? I've sent several to NGC in the past to notate.
Thank you. This is the information I need.
A great reponched date, but common.
Always fun to find these issues... especially on gold coins.... I always think of gold as special (I know it is not and there are many errors) and feel that extra care was taken.... it really was not, but should have been. Cheers, RickO
That's pretty cool!

The series contains numerous overlooked oddities that would be considered significant in a series with more collector interest.
Reverse doubling on the 1891 $2.50 is fairly common but goes largely unnoticed.

That is because ALL business strike 1891 $2-1/2's were from that doubled reverse.
Thank you all for your responses.
