Hopefully there is a list that can be provided.
Also, hopefully, the victim has or will contact Numismatic Crime Information Center and file a report on the theft.

Did they know they had been robbed as soon as they left the restaurant or did they find out later when they got home?

  • WalkerfanWalkerfan Posts: 9,734 ✭✭✭✭✭

Not trying to blame the victims but how many times does this tale need to be retold before people learn??

Just stop at a fast food drive thru....that is much better than a $70,000 dinner!!

    A ccw wouldn't hurt, either.

I just stopped in to get a slice of pizza like 30 minutes ago. I had a $5 lib in my car and put it in my pocket before walking inside the pizza place for 3 minutes. That's my level of paranoia.

Don't mean to pile on as that's the last thing this dealer needs to see, just a bit shocking to read something like this. Hoping for the best but that list above doesn't seem too unique.

This reminded me of an old Lenny Bruce routine. I'll clean it and shorten it.
Thief breaks into old lady's home, finds A dollar under the mattress and beats her to death. People say poor lady, what a sick thief, should be hung.
Same thing happens, finds $100k, kills. People say 'crazy old lady, should've used a bank'.

One of these days the bad guys are going to pick the wrong dealer to pull this crap on.
There should be more cameras in the areas that dealers come and go.
It would also be good for more dealers to set up a buddy system to watch each others backs.
I don't see an answer for leaving coins unwatched. My insurance won't cover it.

A lot of times some of us will train going home. I know for a fact coming back from the Cincinnati show years ago I was being followed! We all pulled into to a gas station around 100 or so miles into the trip and the guy pulls up and parks in front of the convenience store in front of where I was getting gas. I start pumping gas and the guy gets out looking at me. I start talking to my friend at the next pump...and another comes up jawing. I saw the look in the guys eyes and he jumped in his car and got the H outta dodge! Didn't even go in the store!

targeting out of town dealers knowing they will make a pit stop. Specific info on the dealers is easily obtained at their tables, where the inventory is easily evaluated. It all starts at the dealer table.

Would be simple for law enforcement to set up a sting using the right dealer with the right inventory. I'm surprised a dealer hasn't set up his own sting with a few shotguns.

my first thought was to look at the date of this post. I thought this was a post from the past - dejavu - same thing, folks stopped to eat. They were clearly being followed. They must have a gang, each one targets someone -- and see who lucks out/split the goods? If one stops to eat and the other one doesn't then, one thug/group of thugs - gets lucky/the other ones don't.

It is not hard to determine if you are being followed. Just exit the highway and get right back on or just circle around a block. I do this every time when I leave a show even though I am just a collector. I would think this would be automatic for every dealer at a show.

It is a shame that we see this a couple of times a year. But let's not lose perspective. The odds of this happening to anyone is very slim.

While I am sure a cased, followed, wait for the moment, attack, scenario does happen, I believe you are giving the average thief WAY too much credit on these event. I doubt a person or group is traveling the circuit checking out coin dealers, checking out who is going to stop at a restaurant, etc.

Look at the crime stats for vehicle burglaries in general, and it is staggering. Most are simple open an unlocked vehicle and grab what is handy. If I am reading the tables correctly, for 2014, in Texas, there were over 214,000 vehicle burglaries committed, and, of course, that is the ones reported. On average, of the property taken, about 12% is recovered, except for the vehicle itself, which is about 50%.

I live in a very nice neighborhood, 3 car garage, but my personal vehicle stays outside, because I have too many cars, and it is too big (F250 supercab 4WD with 8' bed and big push bar set up on the front). I do not lock it, as I do not want someone breaking a window to check out what is inside. I know at least 1 a year, someone checks it out at night. The only time I had a problem was, my fault, I forgot to lock my tail gate one night, and it was taken. I was shocked, as there was nothing special about the tail gate, not a Platinum or Back Up camera, just a pull out step and stripper pole, but the insurance cut me a check for $4974, and now I have a lock clip on the tail gate hinge. Ironically, that was 8 months ago, and 2 weeks ago, I was out of the country, and my neighbor lost their tail gate (Another F250, but it was a 2 tone, Aluminum, Platinum, with everything in it tail gate, over $9K) and my son found my replacement tail gate down, but the lock clip deterred them.

Read the statistics around any Rail station, Hotel parking lot, etc., and it is rife with vehicle burglaries. Nothing says Steal Me like an out of state plate at a hotel or restaurant as there is likely to be good stuff inside (cash, cameras, jewelry, etc.).

Put all your best stuff in a backpack and act casually, never let it leave your side. Never. Ever.

If your inventory fits in a few boxes, or takes up several tables, different defensive strategies are required.

Robberies in this biz happen every where and at any time. About 30 years ago Martin Paul was a Pittsburgh PA show-they took his entire display case at the show and walked out. Before 9/11 a coin dealer was on a plane. Put his case in the overhead and bam! He remembered a guy walking back and forth during boarding. It was gone when he landed. Even Heritage who travels with heavy security was at an airport at curbside and someone took a case (not of coins tho). The last most spectacular: at FUN a few years ago, CNN had pulled up in front of the Peabody Hotel with several people in his car. In front of dozens of people-a car pulled up and at knife point robbed them of all their cases.

My point, it happens to everyone-even if you are prepared.

At our show in Ames, we have a dealer who comes from Kearney, Nebraska. Not hard to figure that he's going to make at least one stop on the way home. Also not too hard to go to the parking area and figure which vehicle is probably his.

I don't know the dealers, but this is a terrible thing to read and I wish them the best in recovering their losses.

Reading through this thread it looks like this happens or something similar a lot more often than I thought.

I can’t believe them being that careless.

When transporting coins to a show my route is non stop. I may go thru a drive thru if feel not being followed. Eat at the show to avoid empty stomach when leaving. This way nonstop to y destination then dine when coins safely put away (home safe, etc).

Never leave your material unattended while traveling.

If driving be careful obey traffic laws so avoid being stopped. Be cognizant of speed traps.

Traveling w coins / currency one of biggest stresses in the business due to possibility of loss.

    Do you wear a diaper?

Good point to bring up - since I usually travel to shows by myself, making pit stops is not an option as I'm not going to leave the car unattended. I rarely drive to shows that are more than a 3-hour drive (more than that and I take a plane) so nature calls are not a problem. However, just in case (and I hope nobody is grossed out), I do have a large plastic cup in the car for such emergencies.

About 20 years ago, went to the Baltimore show, carried coins in a briefcase (mistake), parked on the street about
2 blocks away. Three people followed me, thought I could make it to my car in time, but as they got closer, I knew
I could not and ran. When I came back in car and got in, someone came up to my car window, tapped on his chest as
if they had a gun, I simply waved and drove away. Lessons learned, backback, no briefcase. Park in lot, either next to
stadium or in the garage nearby.

My sister runs the transportation of goods at a major company. In one year they had four hijackings of their trucks.
When the trucker stopped after 6 hours to go to the bathroom or something, they would steal the rig.
The highjackers would follow them from the factory
The process was changed so that there were two truck drivers in each truck, if there was a need to stop, one would
    always stay with the truck.
Same here, if two people, go to a subway, one person stays with car, the other picks up food.

I remember one dealer was robbed 10 years ago, whereas he drove all the way home (12 hours if I remember)
and when he went in his house, they stole his coins out of his car then.

Yes, the "copper weenie" in Laura's words. That was Tom Reynolds. He told me about 2 years ago that he saw one of the coins in a Heritage Auction. They pulled the auction and contacted (or tried) the consignor, who was of Russian decent and in Russia. He got "one coin" back, to my knowledge. That one !
