The president and Martha Washington graciously donated their silver tea service, a wedding present, to be used to strike the first coins minted under the auspices of the United States Mint. The 1792 half dismes were struck on a privately owned hand screw press in the basement of John Harper's saw factory, a few blocks from the location where the first U. S. Mint was being constructed.

[There are two statements, one a numismatic fact and the other a numismatic fallacy. You figure out which is which.]

They that can give up essential Liberty to obtain a little temporary safety deserve neither Liberty nor safety. Benjamin Franklin

Fact: Had my 14 year old (at the time) grandfather bought 20 rolls of 1909-S VDB Cents that year, the coins would be worth a million bucks today.

    Fallacy: He did!

37% of all numismatic statistics are made up...63% of all numismatic fallacies are false.

The 1964 D Peace Dollar exists in public hands. No 1964 D Peace Dollars were issued. Cheers, RickO

The 1792 half dismes are lawful coins of the United States of America. The 1792 half dismes were stuck under the authority of the Coinage Act of 1792.
