The Cloud Appreciation Society has 43,500 members.

RogerBRogerB Posts: 8,852 ✭✭✭✭✭

Cloud Appreciation Society members pay $23.07 annually.
The ANA has 24,000 members. ANA members pay $28.00 annually.

Is this food for thought or just idle fog?

Many of us looked at clouds when we were young. You can see all sorts of things. Some studied clouds and some of us imaged them. Farmers probably use cloud formations to predict the weather.

It would be interesting to see the age breakdown of the Cloud Society members. All I can say is they must put out a really great publication as it doesn't take $20+ to go outside and see an elephant stomping on a cat sooner or later in a cloud. I'd also like to know how many members live in CO!

Notice the member contact and information? Clarity of communication?

    [apols to Joni Mitchell]

"I've looked at clouds from both sides now
From up and down and still somehow
    It's clouds illusions I recall
I really don't know clouds at all."

If you wish to substitute 'coins' for 'clouds', well, I would understand.

Is there a "Professional Cloud Grading and Slabbing" or "Nimbus Grading Corp." company? I guess you could keep your slabbed clouds in a lock box at the Fogg Bank?

Why are there nearly double the ANA's members paying almost as much? How is ROI for members maintained or developed? Is the hobby of coin collecting more nebulous to communicate than clouds?

  • Insider2Insider2 Posts: 14,452 ✭✭✭✭✭

I think it's because they are a worldwide organization. Clouds are everywhere while our coins are not.

  • RogerBRogerB Posts: 8,852 ✭✭✭✭✭

Can ANA or other coin organizations learn from it?

Written by Joni Mitchell, but Judy Collins recorded it first - Collins' being the pop version everyone has heard.

Something kinda like John Denver writing 'Leaving on a Jet Plane' but Peter Paul and Mary made it famous. Denver did record it before Peter Paul and Mary did, though.

Mitchell later 'covered' her own song. Denver did his much better than Mitchell did hers.

It's like they all should have been modern coin designers for the U.S. Mint. They could have all put their initials on their works.

I think Sinatra did it better than anyone....Clouds that is... That is amazing, I had no idea there was an organization to appreciate clouds.... I have been doing it lo these many years for free..... I hope they do not come after me for 'back dues'..... I simply will not pay to appreciate clouds....I will go up on my roof and just lie there, appreciating the drifting art and reveling in all the money I am saving..... :D:D Cheers, RickO

According to Jack Valenti, if you watched network TV and skipped the commercials, that was stealing.....

No, no, no. Listen to the 2001 Grammy version. Mitchell conveys the wisdom of age so much more effectively than the Collins recording.

Speaking of the money (dues), ANA members who get a physical hard copy of 'The Numismatist' pay $46 per annum - unless they renew for a couple of years at a time, then it is slightly cheaper.

39 year member here. IMHO, the ANA has memtamorphasized into complete irrelevance. After so many disappointments, you can't even get people worked up about it anymore. The ANA can't learn from the Clouds organization or anybody else, because Colorado Springs is just a place where "professional association" people retire on the job, ten or twenty years early.

After the next time ANA does Rosemont, maybe I'll stop.

This is another topic that is so stale, a horse that has been beaten to death before now.

    Well....even a "dead horse" can become a meal.... ;)

    @Coinosaurus

Doesn't matter when Joni sang it, 1969 or 2001, her version is SO SO SLOW.

Joni wrote great lyrics, great thoughts, but others sang "Clouds" better.

Pretty certain I ate a horsemeat sandwich in France 40 years ago. With the anticipation of my first European trip, and with the flying ahead several time zones and then not wanting to stay in the hotel room when I first got there, I was lightheaded and so freakin' hungry... the sandwich was edible, but I don't think my mind was quite right.

Now that's kinda how I feel when I send in my ANA dues.

Was it really necessary to bump another old thread rather than do this on the thread you just started where you complained about people bumping old threads?

    YES!

The old thread belonged to a member who made a humorous post regarding florescent light. You need to be in the loop to understand. You are not.

Starbucks now has "Cloud Macchiatos". You can probably get 5 of them for the cost of an ANA membership.

Every time my wife took me to try one it was the same thing,
“I’m sorry, we’ve run out of the cloud product for the day”.
Like it was some rare platinum proof coin.
Finally went early enough one day and had one. Maringue froth is all.

    We're all born MS70. I'm about a Fine 15 right now.
