FYI time will tell but the Tigers got at least one stud and future star in the trade

this is the way MLB works. a Team like Detroit rides a guy like Verlander as long as they can, but a tipping point eventually happens when: the Team goes into a decline and the player contract escalates past a reasonable amount. at that time they move him via trade deadline/free agency, and acquire the basics for the future, which they develop in their farm system. it doesn't happen regularly in MLB that Teams see their draft picks reach their potential on the roster of the drafting Team.

without knowing who the guys are that Detroit acquired for Verlander, it's probable that they will reach the big leagues in 2-3 years and if they really help the Team they'll be a bargain, even with Verlanders co-paymeny figured into the salaries.

In return for trading their franchise pitcher, the Tigers received the No. 3 (Franklin Perez, #40 in MLB), No. 9 (Daz Cameron), and No. 11 (Jake Rogers) prospects in Houston's farm system, per MLB.com. The 19-year-old Perez is one of the fastest rising pitching prospects in baseball. He has a 3.08 ERA with 78 strikeouts in 86 1/3 innings split between Single-A and Double-A this year.

Cameron, 20, is the son of longtime big leaguer Mike Cameron and an outfielder like his father. He is hitting a robust .271/.349/.466 with 14 home runs and 32 steals in 120 Single-A games this season. The 22-year-old Rogers is an elite defensive catcher who is hitting .263/.352/.472 at two different Single-A levels in 2017.

So one guy was a #40 in MLB prospect (not that high really) and the other two are not in the top 100. In essence, these are fairly low ranking guys.

Looking more into this trade, Houston got a good deal. Didn't give up much and Tigers are partly paying for him. Without Verlander, Houston in not in the World Series.

Yes with prospects you never know. The Tigers actually did better with the trade of Justin Wilson to the Cubs. They know have their everyday third baseman for the foreseeable future that they got in return. So much so that he has ready displaced a guy who had 100 rbi's last year at third. He was the Cubs top prospect. Wilson sucked for the Cubs. In return for Upton, JD Martinez, Wilson, Velander etc they netted 10 prospects when all said and done and shredded 75 million in salary. There was no way they could have afforded to resign Martinez and Upton would have opted out. Its the way of world. The next couple years will be painful. The key is to retool and avoid having rebuild

The Tigers drafted the number one pitcher in last years draft and have the number one pick this year. One can only hope and pray it pans out.

I think the Yankees learned to same lesson and are ahead of the curve

speaking of Justin Wilson, he was traded from Yankees to Tigers two years ago for Shane Green and Luis Cessa. Green was a key guy in their bullpen this year. If he develops a change up, he will be moved to the starting rotation. So I guess that made has worked out for both teams.
