= = 2019 Apollo 11 50th Anniversary Coin Designs = =

In today's Coin World is an article about the designs being considered for thee convex Apollo 11 50th Anniversary. The reverse is already decided but the obverse design is not. Any jump out at you? It should be noted that 5A has coinability issues and will not make the cut. This coin will be in the style of the Baseball Hall Of Fame concave / convex type. Try to picture these obverse designs with a concave look.

B5 and D2 are the only on s that would make me think of the moon or space flight in an instant.
All others are just silly. B1 could be girls scouts, bird watcher, peeping Sara, navigator on a ship, hunter....
A5!would be cool to see minted.
D3 & 4 and B5 would work with the concave aspect. And they are instantly SPACE identifiable.
I work in flight test and sit at control stations. That design is far, far, from indicating anything space instantly. I wasn’t sure if I was looking at a nascar production van or a casino.
The boot print will be the chosen design.
In order of preference, for me-B-5, D-4, D-2, C-4, C-1.
D1!
I LOVE Planet of the Apes!
No?
A1!
I LOVE Lost in Space!
C3 has John F Kennedy in space.
I like BK...I mean B5 with cheese. Does the mint have specials?
I would like to see the moon. A full moon design without all the rockets, space helmets, or Eagles. Even though the Eagles are traditional...similar to the baseball coin where you saw a whole baseball....lets see a whole moon. Some of these designs are just too busy.
D2 - most obvious issue:
The whole Sat-5 rocket would not be over the moon of that relative size.
A bit of common sense says it is a superposition.
Many or most may not realize the superposition.
Even as a superposition, the representation is odd. Nothing was done to make it appear as a superposition.
Yes!
I like D 2 the most.
Actually a ripoff of Star Wars would work.
As mentioned earlier in the other thread, there is a great image of the command module orbiting over the moon, etc.
I'm with the best of the worst as the boot print.
I like 3B..... However, we will be stuck with some consensus of bland mediocrity..... Cheers, RickO
My favorite design is this one:
The Dancing Spacesuit
The Mysterious Egyptian Magic Coin
Coins in Movies
Coins on Television
They are all too heavy and I don't think of the Moon when I see these. I won't be a buyer. How about a simple obverse image of the Moon from Earth with some of the key craters shown? C1 is the closest but it is a mess... Yikes what are these designers thinking about?????
Best, SH
These all are overthought. Some one above suggested, and the more I think about it, a full moon. Simple, clean, reflects the topic without frills. It would also work well with the concave shape.
Only A5 for me despite "coinability issues". Don't know what that means. I'll wait for my CW issue to find out.
D4 for me. One astronaut was orbiting the moon in the spacecraft while the other two and the lunar module were on the surface.
I like JFK in the sky with diamonds......no, not really.
C1 looks amateurish.
D1 looks like it was lifted from the cover of a 1935 Astounding pulp magazine. Don't get me wrong---I loved Astounding Science Fiction....but...
Yeah, what the heck is the deal with the binoculars? Weird.
The footprint one will be called "Bigfoot was here", or maybe the "Trilobite" coin....
My "favorite" would be C4 or A4 only by default.
I believe that D4 represents the three space programs of Mercury, Gemini, and Apollo. There are subtle differences in each space suits. This redering does not represent an Apollo crew.
I believe you are actually referring to D3 not D4. In D4 the spacecraft is represented in flight... So in my mind when combined with the reverse that is already decided, shown with the landing craft on the surface, the coin would as a whole, represent both actions taking place simultaneously.
D2, or the Full Moon with an indicator of Tranquility Base.
R2 Reverse,
D2 Obverse.
Sorry, the Reverse is already decided.
Convex silver coin with a lunar boot print? Been there, done that.
It's all sad. Mebbe we should have other countries design our lunar coinage. They seem to have better ideas.
I like 4D, 5B.
I like the convex reverse idea but I think the convex design should be simply an image of the moon.
Great transactions with oih82w8, JasonGaming, Moose1913.
D2 looks the best designed to me. Most of these are pitiful.
Collecting 1970s Topps baseball wax, rack and cello packs, as well as PCGS graded Half Cents, Large Cents, Two Cent pieces and Three Cent Silver pieces.
What? The boot design was already used in 2009? Our designs aren't even all original?
Seeing as the convex side is already determined and depicts the mission/spaceship/spacedudes, I prefer a Liberty/Eagle/National identity for the other side. So, 3B, then 3A as my two favorites. I do like a few of the other designs too, but for this coin paired with the convex side already chosen, give me an Eagle!
Anybody get it?
Don't worry, CaptHenway, I got it.
In honor of the memory of Cpl. Michael E. Thompson
I did too but couldn't help my self
Got it, too.
Phew, I've been looking for R2 for days@!
