@CoinCollectorJR - you should tell them never to melt coins again and have them call you any time they get anything.
I feel bad for the people that they ripped off because of the store’s own ignorance.

Actually, I’m trying to start working there, in hopes of things like this never happening again...I know the people well enough for them to trust me, so I am going to try my best for these things to stop

What state is this place? I don't know any pawn or jewelry shop that would not try to maximize profits especially on a $70K transaction. And what is this thing about them melting the $20 gold coins down? Isn't that just based on their sending them out to a refiner? Don't you have waiting periods in your area where the authorities review pawn shop, etc. purchases?

    Again, 70k might be wrong

  • Coins have been given to the shop to be graded...expecting them back in 3-4 weeks...the “scratch” you see on the 1835 may be a die crack

Looking at your picture, it does have the look of a die crack. Looking at the first pictures you posted and no longer up, definitely looked like a scratch.

The mark is between Star 1 and Star 2 and travels through the field, aiming at Liberty's mouth. Problem is, 1835s are unknown with a die crack at this location. If it is a crack, it will be the first coin to have it. I've catalogued over 150 18335s with this die pair. Almost all of them do have a die crack on the obverse. Yours does too. It runs through Star 6, through the lower portion of the L in LIBERTY, and through Miss Liberty's temple. You can see it on your coin. Some coins have a second die crack that starts at the temple and runs north through the E. Can' tell if your coin has that one.

Some refer to overgraded slabs as Coffins. I like to think of them as Happy Coins.

In CA coins are exempt from hold period.
    Jewelry is held.
