Anyone up for a FRIDAY METAL PORN POST?
I go the new palladium eagle this week. But since I already posted that...
Here's one of my oldest gold coins. In fact, it is arguably the very earliest gold coin, because it is arguably the first ever coin.
This is a "trite" from the kingdom of Lydia, now part of western Turkey. The people there had found and exchanged shiny nuggets of alluvial electrum -- the natural alloy of gold and silver they found in local rivers. After a while it made sense to start having a more standard size and shape to make trade easier. To help that, they began stamping shapes into them. Then the king got involved, and began stamping his seal (a roaring lion) onto those that met the purity and weight he wanted...and the first coin was born.
This one dates from about 600 BC, so it's roughly 2600 years old.
Got any old gold or silver? Or maybe the piece you like the best that you've owned for the longest time?

Indeed a very cool piece!

I don't normally do this, but I just got to go through a mid-1980 metal hound's estate. Very cool early 100 oz sunshine mint bar in all of its original wrapping, piles of early 1980s Chinese silver, and some gorgeous mid-century Mexican silver. I just posted these on the BST, but the coins and the images were so pretty I thought they might be appreciated here, too. Click on the images to zoom in...

Snapped some shots of a few of my favorite 5oz bars. The Tri State comes more common in 1oz typical flat bar and a 10oz kit kat, which are cool but this one is basically the 10oz cut in half. I've never seen another, have you?
The other bar halmarked World Mint is a real neat shape and the ends have circular lathe lines on both ends. Maybe to trim to weight. Both eBay pickups over the years.
I always like the 5oz size as it's not tiny like a single and not huge so somewhat affordable.
Time to post some cool old pours..........
The Engelhard 2nd down on the right side is pretty rare. Only 250 exist of this variety.
@Weiss....Nice assortment of silver coins.... must have been interesting .....Cheers, RickO
