Commercially Available Coin Software

Hi,

I did search for this and the last time it came up was 2015. Do any of you actually use commercially available coin collection management software? The posters in the threads I found stated that they actually used Excel, and so I figured that I would try it. It's alright, but I am looking for something with a GUI and that is more along the lines of archival as well as cataloging (if that makes sense).

So, I figured if anyone were to be using the software it would be you fine people in here. I've looked at Liberty Street and Trove, and some freeware, but I wanted to know if anyone had an opinion of any commercially available products.

If you think that Excel is better that's cool. I also used MS Access. But I am really looking for responses not telling me about Excel...I'm looking for responses from coin software users.

Thanks!

I expect you will get an overwhelming number of responses that state Excel. I also have used Excel for perhaps up to two decades for the qualities that you appear to be searching for in software. By the way, it seems to me this topic comes up quite often, so I imagine the search parameters you used might not have found the other discussions.

Thanks. I did a series of different keyword searches and advanced searches, and the only one that was most recent was 2015. Thanks for taking the time, Tom.

I'm happy to attempt to help. The board had an update a year or two ago and after that time the search feature seems to find fewer and fewer topics regardless of how thorough one searches. Good luck.

I tried several of the commercial packages before going back to Excel. The commercial packages were clunky compared to Excel and could not be customized exactly the way I want (for example, I track different information for different series).

I've very much liked Collectors Assistant, if you want to spend the money. The customer service can't be beat.

Trove Software has Coin Elite... I used it in years past.... although in recent years I have not used any software... (since I do not sell coins, it is not really critical to me). I did like it and I know it has gone through continuous updates.... worth looking at.. Cheers, RickO

I used a product called Coin Manage. Haven't messed with it in a long while. It was OK.

Is there any software out there that would allow me to scan a PCGS or NGC slab, and then presto! The coin cert is verified, and the basic info gets dumped into an excel spreadsheet (Country, Denomination, Date, grade, variety, etc).

Smartphone software/apps exist to scan barcodes.
For PCGS slabs, the coin number and grade are included directly in the barcode, so with a web lookup the software could get the other info.
For NCG slabs, you have to enter the grade in the Cert Verification page, and it is not part of the barcode, so the software would have to use some computer vision techniques to read it from the slab (or you would have to enter it by hand).
Also, I imagine the PCGS and NGC website limit the pace or number of lookups, so there could be a delay involved.
Similarly, the web interfaces will likely change over time, so the software would need to be updated from time to time.

The PCGS set registry allows you to inventory non-PCGS slabbed (including raw) coins. Even though it isn't perfect, it will probably gain in popularity as the inventory software of choice over time.
