Guess the Grade with a new twist. Guess (4) 1980 Topps Bird RC/Erving/Magic RC at one time!

I thought this would be fun for everyone. Not necessarily any hidden tricks here so don't guess obscenely low thinking you can outwit the game. :)

This may be one of the hardest cards to determine grading no matter how sharp your corners are due to 50% or higher of the population carrying some existence of PD/OC/MC or numerous other known issues. These are all PSA graded.

****1980 Topps Bird RC/Erving/Magic RC****

I will reveal the 4 grades Sunday night after 10 EST. PSA cards and/or this card does not scan well for me, but hopefully you can gauge enough knowing the corners are sharp and backs are clean. 1 of these cards I believe is under-graded FWIW, so I will also be using this as a gauge myself!

_*Tip: Only one card has a qualifier on it. _

Thank you to everyone so far who has participated. **No one has more than 1 right in their 4 card grades. **
As I said before, I deem this card very tough to pinpoint where PSA will be grading wise.

At the end of this I will average the grades compared to the actual grade once I reveal them. I will also share my result as to the card I thought deserves a review to see if I was right.

Please continue to post your grade assessments.

All 8pd, but #1 has a shot at a straight 8 if not for the slight discoloration on the top boarder.

    Results are in.

Average Guess (PD used 2 grades lower so I posted the lower grades with and without PD)
    1. PSA 8
    2. 6 or 8PD
    3. 7 or 9PD
    4. 7 or 9PD

    Actual Grade
    1. PSA 6
    2. 6
    3. 9PD
    4. 7

For the most part the forum averaged the correct grade collectively, except with card 1, which is the card I thought should have graded higher. Everyone scored that high so it isn't just a me thing.

Looks like spotting in the black background.

Yea its very minute in the black background of magic and bird. Most of the time the PD is black on the white, but I got snowed I suppose on the black. You would be somewhat surprised the card originally graded a 6 (I didnt ask for qualifiers), I asked for a grader review and they gave me a 8PD. I sent in for a review and got a 9PD so it moved quite a bit from original grade depending on how you view the qualifier. I think I could get no PD 8 if submitted raw but don't have plans to.

I did not realize I could click and zoom in on the cards until my second guess. #1 card i said at first an 8. But then after seeing it in a bigger image i then said 6. Top left boarder/corner(about 1 cm long starting at the corner) looked dinged on the edge to me. Lifted, dented, or stained

I think the conclusion is this card is real tough to grade and legit hard in high end 9. No wonder the 10 sells for the price of a car. Centering, print line, print blotches in the Magic panel and black specks on some others. This makes everything a little subjective compared to a chrome right out of the pack instant 10. Additionally the qualifier or non qualifier really can fluctuate the final grade.

I don't think the corner/edge is lifted, but for some reason it got a 6. I've really scanned this card over a few hundred times though and it boggles me. I think that #1 PSA 6 is in the wrong holder, but I will have to check for that mark you've mentioned. It looks pretty darn good for a 6 regardless. I thought I had an 8 for sure on that one.

I couldn't agree more. That is why I thought it would be a fun challenge. I may do it again sometime with a few others.

    How about this one?

  • secretstashsecretstash Posts: 1,396 ✭✭✭✭

That has to be an 8 or better or I've been fooled. I am going to go 8.5 and should be reviewed for 9.

    I guess 8.5.

    What is it? :)

I would have a nightmare grading these particular cards, that much I can say. OTOH, if I wanted one, it seems like you might be able to get a very sharp 6 or 7 that has the most minor-appearing of flaws.

Along the same lines... can anyone figure out what dropped this all the way to a 5?

Left edge middle of the card.

Ah ha. Good eye. Some kind of edge dent...rubber band maybe.

Not ignoring the edge damage, I think the back is potentially rougher than it appears also. The perforations to me do not look right and the back area was rubbed on the perforations. I also see potential fingernail imprints on the back, but I think everything combined left a nice looking 5 on the front side.
