Pleasant surprise this morning. 1965 SMS quarter ogh

Sandman70gtSandman70gt Posts: 1,003 ✭✭✭✭✭

Bought a few inexpensives for my graded dansco 7070 set. Went to the po box this morning, and this is my surprise: ebay picture first, my pics after.

I bought it because the holder looked soooo good. Now I cant decide if i want to chase the cameo/dcam rainbow.
It is the nicest SMS I've ever seen. The reverse does look a lot better than my phone pic can give.
Thanks for your thoughts!

Super nice! I would only chase the cam if you plan on reselling it. Aren't they tough on designating CAM on SMS coins? I sent in a Lincoln I thought would go cam but it didn't. :(

If it isn't I don't know what is but I wouldn't take it out of the holder if resubmitting.

if the pictures are accurate, then it should be an easy cameo.

Nice pick up, not sure if the breaks in the frost on the reverse wings would hold it back from cameo.

That die with the small crescent of frost in the right field produces some nice cameos.
When I saw that in the first pic, I knew what was coming. :):):)

If that coin were mine, it would be headed back to PCGS. Great shot at cameo.

Use the reconsideration option. They will only crack if it upgrades. Congrats on a nice coin!

my thoughts are that it won't receive the Cameo designation and that we are "fooled" with the second set of pictures by the use of either diffused light or too much on the white balance. the picture has the look of the "lampshade effect" demonstrated by MadMarty and used extensively by R&I Coins.

that is only my critique of the available pictures. the obverse frost looks better than the reverse frost, but neither side really shows clear, deeply reflective fields. that again may be due to the lighting.

on the plus side, the coin was struck with the "right" obverse die as evidenced by the heavy polish to the right near the rim. some of the best Cam/DCam coins from this date have that marker.

That sure looks like a nice surprise....as far as what to do....a lot depends on what you like. If you will sell it, then the CAM designation is a good move... of course the slab is also a selling point....Not being a dealer, I am not sure which is the best move in today's market. Cheers, RickO

There is not much risk in cracking and sending back in since you only paid 10 bucks! :)

that looks like a real pleasant surprise. i cant wait for the pics

  • mannie graymannie gray Posts: 7,259 ✭✭✭✭✭

I don't think it has a chance to DCAM, might CAM....the obverse might carry the reverse, which is weak in spots and also the reverse doesn't look to have the deep dark mirrors they want on these.
You will most likely receive a 68 on it instead of the CAM designation.
