Any ideas what this is?

Just wondering if anyone has an idea of what this could be? It was found at a pre-revolution site which yielded a number of coppers. An "M" is clear on it. Your guess is better than mine since I have no idea.

My guess is the backing plate for a doorknob or a plate that keeps a bearing on a shaft.
It's about the size of a quarter. Sorry I didn't give that perspective.
it almost looks like it goes to some assembly or part of it. I don't really know
It is off center, so perhaps made for an assembly and found to be lacking for that reason. Just a guess.. Cheers, RickO
