Rough night. Got it handed to me on the bay.

Disclaimer: This is a cathartic post which equals whine fest so stop reading now if that offends you.

There were 7 cards tonight in the PWCC Hockey auction that I wanted. Three I knew were going to be bigger cards for me. The way they timed out and the early bidding forced me to decide which one I was going to go for. The first one to end was a 1951 Parkie # #52. It was a 8.5 pop 4 with 2 higher. I like this card a lot. But in saying that I admit that I also struggle with liking this card. It is not a Sabres card so it falls outside of my main focus but it is a very cool card to me. But since I have a few copies (none as nice) I decided that I would pass. It sold for under what I would have bid. Ok, no big deal. I made a conscious decision to pass. C'est la vie. Yeah right!

So up next is card #2. 1966 #35. Orr RC in PSA 2. Now this is no ordinary 2. I looked through all the 2s, 3s, 4s, 5s, 6s, & even 7s on VCP and this card scanned awesome. Someday I want to see this card in hand to tell for sure whether I f'd up or not. There were a few that "scanned" as nicer but sold for 6xs what other 2s sold for. As it started to tick down the price jumped and I bailed. While the card was beautiful. I just could not spend on a 2 more than the last few 6s sold. Most didn't "scan" as nice but when the the card description mentions multiple creases you have to get a little jumpy right? Well I did anyway. So I pulled the chute again. Damn you PWCC and your "High End" label. ;)

So now I had a few small time cards that I was planning to buy as placeholders. In trying to complete my 1970s Sabres run I've stopped waiting for 10s and started to buy 9s if the price and timing is right. There were 4 cards that met that description and I picked up 2. My Brother in law came into town and since his plane was late he walked in just as they were closing. I grabbed 2 of the 4 and missed the others because I was distracted. Oh well.

There was still one more card I was after. 1998 OPC Chrome Blast From The Past Wayne Gretzky Refractor in PSA 10. Pop 3. Beautiful card. Can't say I even new the card existed before I saw this copy listed. I decided I was going to get it. Bidding was at $898. I tried to snipe it and even though the numbers don't lineup I know I hit the bid button with 1 second left on the clock. I figured a bid of almost 2.5 x the current bid with 1 second left should do the trick right? NOPE! I was the under bidder.

So now I sit here drowning my sorrows with 4 fingers of 4 Roses SB spilling my heart to you guys. Thanks for listening.

Kevin

PS. I wish I'd just bought the Parkie and called it a night.

I know the pain. Ive watched auctions for days and planned out my strategy carefully. Waited for that last second, placed a bid $10 over current max and got screwed in the end by one dollar lol. Oh well. I am 3 for 3 on my past few Judge PSA 10 cards though. And didn’t even have to overbid just to ensure a win.

I'm confused. Is this going to be one of those threads full of anecdotal stories supporting snipe bidding as the greatest thing ever? Or a thread full of examples where earlier bids would have made sure that you were in the auctions in case of some unforseen distraction, and, at the very least, produced more information for you to formulate your bidding plan?

i too got outbid on the pwcc auctions last night.

oh well. i guess i'm richer now

Yes there was a ton of nice HK closing last night with PWCC.
Prices were very strong I can only afford so much.
    Won a 59 Duff, 58 Stanley and 64 Howe psa 7
But bid strong and won on a 53 Forrest Gump 8 that I have wanted for a long time.
Under bidder has a 100% bidding rate with PWCC. May be legit but I seriously doubt that anyone just shops at one store.

Hey LOTSOS - I picked up my 98 Gretzky a couple years ago. I paid $1,888.88 for it at the time. It sounds like you put in a good solid bid.

Sweet card. Like I said I didn't even know these existed before the PWCC listing. Since refractors are tough to scan do they look as gorgeous in hand as I'm thinking they should? If you ever decide to move it please let me know!

Kevin - yes it is a sharp card in hand. One of these days I need to send it in and have it put in the latest and greatest PSA holder.

Keep at it, there are always cool cards to chase!! The thrill of the hunt!!

I would never have imagined that Gretzky would be so pricey, I would have thought a couple hundred max. I had never seen that card before either. I would pick the Orr over it, but I agree with your price logic on the Orr also.

    Hiya Kevin

If ya can't express your disappointment here?

    Then where?

Sorry to hear this. And, yes, it's happened to me many, many times.

Ya know the good thing about eBay?

There's usually another one coming down the road to bid on.

One thing I learned about eBay when it first got popular with collectibles: You can go broke saving money

It seemed like the Orr card had some residue on the back near the stats line. It seemed like it might have been in a scrap book at some point.

  • I can add disappointment. I won an auction for a 1983 Star Dominique Wilkins XRC BGS 8 at an unbelievable price of $214.52. The whole rest of the night I was dancing, singing, and in a wonderful mood. Well, the next day I got on eBay and had a message that my order was cancelled. I messaged the seller and asked why. I even offered him more money because I have been chasing this card for a long time. He finally messaged me back and claimed that the card had already sold and his "friend accidentally" posted it.

I know this happens to people all the time but damn it makes me mad.

A 2 for 6 money on that card? Ludicrous. Yeah, I know it's pretty but the odds of a small spiderweb that doesn't show up on a scan are basically 98%. PSA has some hits and misses for sure but when a card that looks that nice is in a 2 holder, there's a reason. Someone bought it thinking it's crossing to a 7 and they're SOL. Hopefully they bought it just because they like nice looks cards and don't care about grades.

The description did mention wrinkles that could be seen on back mostly. Here it is:

**Has a tremendous look for the grade assigned. A few creases account for the grade but these are mostly seen on the back and the front shows like a NRMT card. A steal for the grade; conservatively assessed by PSA. **

That's why I would really like to see this card in hand one day. If I had to use a loupe or raking light to see any wrinkles I could live with that. Especially after looking at some of the 6s that sell for that same price. Like I said it "scans" nice. It looks like a very solid 7 and that goes for double what it sold for.

And Mike you're right. I saved to spend another day! That's the half full version today. Last night was the half empty.

Sorry to hear. those are some sweet cards especially that Orr..I too have such a hard time paying multiples of what the lower grade should command despite the looks..But thats usually 4-6x multiples. ha.

About that Dominique RC, thats horrendous. Was it very much below the average selling price so an unhappy seller? His explanation doesn't sound quite right. Although I'm always "accidentally" posting awesome cards i just bought up for auction. hmmm

Interested in higher grade vintage cards. Aren't we all. image

Not sure why its ok for a seller to be able to just cancel an ebay auction and a buyer is committed to follow thru or get a non paying bidder.

    Bill Barilko sighting. +1

  • BobSBobS Posts: 1,738 ✭✭

    Bill Barilko disappeared that summer,
He was on a fishing trip.
The last goal he ever scored
    Won the Leafs the cup
They didn't win another until 1962,
    The year he was discovered.
I stole this from a hockey card,
    I keep tucked up under
My fifty mission cap, I worked it in
    To look like that

Missed out on all 3 I had snipes on w/PWCC last night, underbidder on one, way low on the other two. C'est la vie, more will come around later.

Rare? Yes. Super Rare? I don't think so. 19 PSA graded examples 3 10s. 14 Beckett graded copies. No 10s & 3 9.5s. They are part of a 10 card insert subset. The inserts were pulled 1/112. I have no idea the print run for 1998 OPC Chrome but I'm guessing it was pretty big.

Funny thing is that for a modern card the centering is brutal for the copies that I've seen. I almost wonder if it was done intentionally to mimic the LR centering issue that the original had because the other 9 inserts in the set all look much more centered.

Anyone bid on the signed Willie Stargell rookie PSA 3 on Sunday? Was it the same auction? I think it was.

What Allen said. Also never seen it before. Is a 10 always tbat expensive? Low pop drives price?

I see what you mean about centering on this card.

Of the 4 raw on ebay, this one appears to have the "best" centering:

    Seller asking $453 and change.

Yeah I'd agree. Thing is that the upper left corner looks touched unless it's just a crumby scan. There is a BGS 9 on Comc but it's a 8 or 8.5 centering wise if I recall.

@bobs is that Gord on your avatar? Can't wait for the documentary to hit Netflix. Such a shame. On the last tour I saw them in Cleveland and Vegas. Unfortunately I couldn't make it to there last Kingston show. Really wish I could have. :'(

I was watching the Orr closely too.
The centering, registration and corners look awesome for any grade.
    But...
I would have liked to see how bad the wrinkles actually are, the scans are just too clean.
Oh well, congrats to the buyer.

That Gretzky refractor got me itchy, BBCE to the rescue

  • LOTSOSLOTSOS Posts: 1,308 ✭✭✭✭✭

I hear you. I hit eBay. I have one more on the way. For whatever reason I didn't think to look at their website. Looks like you cleaned them out. What were they selling them for? Mine were right around $50.

I may bust the second one tonight after I get done watching the battle of Alberta.

Ended up with a Messier retro from the second box. Will probably sub the Wayne with a couple of the Crosby's someday. Was definitely fun and thrill full, oh when the rush crashes back down to earth!
Thanks for posting, I never knew of that card before. The refractor is killer. Good time

Good luck on your rips, I hope you land it!

Congrats again. I found out there is also a 3rd parallel version. It is the base card but with an on card auto. I've seen other blast from the pasts but haven't seen the Gretzky yet. The hunt continues.
