I actually applied for a new cc this past week, the free securid thing pinged me an alert over 36hrs later. No clue if that's good....

I replaced 2 of my 3 CCs. I usually check my CC accounts daily or every other day.

The founder of LifeLock was so confident that he used to IIRC use his own SSN in his ads. I believe his number was used and his system missed it or whatever.

If I understand correctly, LifeLock is great after the fact, when its already too late.

Previous transactions: Wondercoin, goldman86, dmarks, Type2

    WE SCAN
We look for threats to your identity

    WE ALERT

We alert you of suspicious threats by text, email, or phone

    WE RESTORE
If your identity is stolen, a U.S.-based Identity Restoration Specialist will work to fix it.

    WE REIMBURSE
We'll reimburse funds stolen due to identity theft up to the limit of your plan.

    That's their MO anyways

There was a security guy on CNBC the other day and he said Lifelock and others like it are a waste. You can monitor your accounts better then they can. He even said freezing only stops about 4% of crimes. If someone has your data and knows you have a Schwab account, what stops them from calling Schwab, saying they are you, answering all the questions and having your money wired to their account? What stops them from obtaining a drivers license in your name?

So I signed up from Credit Karma a couple of years ago. I got an email today that I had a new credit card in my name (which I did apply for before freezing my credit). The notice was 5 weeks after the fact as I had applied on the 1st of September. I guess the way it works is the credit companies report to the agencies at the end of the month and credit karma scans those reports. So 5 weeks after the fact is the worst case scenario for a free service.

I would imagine Lifelock would be a few days after the fact at most. Is that worth $10/month?

I don't think anyone really needs to freeze their credit over this...these leaks happen WAY more frequently than you think. Sonic just had a big breach...Just pay attention to your mail, phone calls and make sure you have 2 factor authentication on any financial accounts you may have that allow you to.

If anyone has children, I highly recommend you have their credit frozen until 16/18 years old. I have heard horror stories that 3 year old kids had their info used for mortgages and car loans and no one figured out for 15+ years since no one thinks to check a kids credit report. There is no need to have a childs credit unfrozen until 16/18...but adults will find it difficult to have their credit frozen for any extended period of time and it ends up just being a pain in daily life. A lot more companies use soft pulls than you think (Verizon and other telecom companies, heating oil companies, employers etc)

If you go to https://www.annualcreditreport.com/index.action (if you don't want to trust this link google it and you can see that this website is authorized by the gov't and FTC) you can check each of your 3 credit scores annually for 100% free...authorized by law.

If you check 1 credit agency each 4 months, that should be a good way to stay up on any potential funny business happening with your credit. Also, many credit card companies offer free credit scores nowadays so you can see if your score is moving a lot over a short period of time.

So according to John Oliver, he showed a clip of Equifax CEO congressional testimony and Elizabeth Warren stated that Lifelock pays Equifax to do the credit monitoring. So if you went out to protect yourself from Equifax by buying Lifelock, you are actually sending money to Equifax and are really getting the protection from Equifax

Does Equifax help them recover your identity? I'd guess the monitoring is just a small part of the LifeLock package.

That would seem logical. But I thought the point of Lifelock was to keep yur identity safe. I don't see how it does that for the cost of $30/month. You can use free CreditKarma and monitor your credit files yourself for free.

The only plus I can see from LifeLock is their reimbursement of expenses if someone uses your identity while under their watch. I'll look into the CreditKarma tho.

Part of the monthly cost is the "insurance policy" of up to million dollars

    Yes. The terms are everything.

I wonder if anyone has ever actually collected anything from their "insurance policy?"

Signed up for CreditKarma. Said access to TransUnion was blocked. With transUnion TrueIdentity, it was a breeze to unlock and relock access. And it's FREE!
