Do you ever feel....Guilty? (NEWPS)

TommyTypeTommyType Posts: 4,586 ✭✭✭✭✭

Bought these at Long Beach this weekend.

(Nothing special on the Overtons. From memory, they are O-108 and O-143, I’m quite certain...unless my memory failed me).

Your mileage may vary...but I considered them quite attractive for VF Busties. Nice deep color, and good detail worthy of at least the stated grade.

So why would I feel guilty? I know we usually talk around price, and don’t get into specifics. But....I’m going to pull back the curtain on this deal.

The retail price guide values and available information look something like this:

1819 VF-30:

  • PCGS retail: $210
  • PCGS Coinfacts Auction Results, (PCGS coins): $167 - $236
  • Numismedia retail: $174 (VF20) - $330 (XF40)

1827 VF-35:

  • PCGS retail: $175
  • PCGS Coinfacts Auction Results, (PCGS coins): $128 - $223
  • Numismedia retail: $106 (VF20) - $192 (XF40)

(Disclaimer: I didn’t check the quality of the CoinFacts coins listed. They could be much better, or much worse.)

So, you ask, what did I pay? $135 and $105, respectively.

By any measure, I think I got a shockingly good deal! So do I feel guilty? Kind of, since the price on the holders was $145 and $110 before I asked for his “best deal on the pair”. Heck, it was a good deal BEFORE he knocked them down.

Yeah, I know. Nobody is required to pay more than they are asked. But I didn’t go into the deal trying to be a leach, either! That’s just how coin show “haggling” works!

Anyway, I love this purchase. They have found a long term home with me.

I wouldn't feel guilty. What do you think most coin dealers would offer you for the pieces? It sounds like the pieces were wholesaled to you more or less.

Probably so....probably so. Guess I'm not used to getting wholesale prices! I'm at the retail end of the chain. ;)

no! you paid way more than face ;)

seriously though...why feel guilty! it sounds like you struck a good deal. i don't think the person selling would purposely take a loss either...so it must have been a good deal for both parties. congrats.

I feel that any seller would not let any product go for less than a making a profit on. The seller of these two made money on them. No, I do not feel guilty on any purchase.

I personally like the look of the 1819 better.

In hand, they don't look quite as similar as my (poor) photography makes them look. The 1819 is a little lighter and a little "crustier" than the 1827. But honestly, I'd have a tough time picking a favorite between them.

I didn't point it out in my initial post....But notice that they are both in new PCGS holders, and the SN's are separated by just 3. I didn't chat much with the dealer, but it seems it must have been a recent purchase and certification of an old collection? (Though, I guess it could have been recent re-grades/crossovers as well).

Very nice looking coins for the grades and you shouldn't feel guilty because he wouldn't feel guilty taking them from you for a lot less if you were selling to him. I would think that he made a profit off them of some kind, it might not of been a lot but something. Again, very nice looking coins for the grades.

Sorry to hear about your guilt trip. Would you send me the '27 at cost? I swear it will make you feel better.

If feeling guilty on getting a great deal on a coin purchase is wrong then I don't wanna be right.

T-type I think you did really well on those two coins. I would be proud to have them in my vf date set!
And I would feel no guilt whatsoever. I'm sure the seller did ok too.

You did well, nice wholesome coins at a very nice price. Though price appreciation isn't guaranteed, those are the kinds of coins you probably would have very little trouble selling in the future, if you decide to do that.
