If anyone is involved with So-CalledDollars.com, the site is down. Hope it comes up soon so I can finish my research!

@zoins, I think you have an 's' on the end (of "dollars") that doesn't belong.

    Try this: http://so-calleddollar.com/DollarSite/Default.aspx

The "s" does indeed belong. With and without an "s" are two different sites.

    • With the "s" is an online HK reference
    • Without the "s" is Jeff Shevlin's website.

Both are useful for different purposes.

Here's the last snapshot from The Wayback Machine with the "s":

You are correct. I was thinking you were looking for Jeff Shevlin's website, sorry! I tried both sites also and saw the one with the "s" was down.

Hope the website comes back up!

Great site @MsMorrisine! I've come across that in the past and it's actually very useful for my current research project.

Since that site is from John Raymond and he calls himself a "coin nut", I wonder if he ever goes by So-Called Nut

You can use the wayback machine to see a website that is down.

    https://archive.org/web/

Just put in the address and it may have stored the site.

It appears many of the photos don't come up in The WayBack machine. Given the rarity of so-called dollars, I think it's important to create a well-funded online resource, like CoinFacts. I love the variety of so-called dollars and I'm a bit worried about the possibility of online references going away.

I'm doing research on die varieties and none of the sites have pictures of all of the ones that are available so it's an interesting project right now.

@Zoins, have you seen this So-Called Dollar website? http://www.socalleddollar.com/

I used this website for research on the rarity of So-Called Dollars when I owned the Ostheimer Collection of SCDs. I believe the owner of this website is John Raymond.

I used the down for just me or everyone and it shows down there.

I cannot load the site either -- internal server error.

remind me (with this thread if that is easy for you) when the site is back up.

    Site is back up.

There was a change to the server-side hardware. None of that "should" have affected the site, but the timing says that it did. Sorry about that!

    Thanks.

The one I mentioned was already in the Master List in my sig line. The 2 others were added today.

@Zoins, it appears from @jonathanb from his posting above that the website is now back up.

@Zoins , I was not aware of this So-Called Dollar website. Thank you for bringing it to my attention! It appears to be hosted all or in part by the authors of the revised So-Called Dollars book.

For those interested, I purchased the Ostheimer So-Called Dollar Collection in 2004. A fair number of the plate coins in the first edition of the book are from the Ostheimer Collection.

I contributed photos for 88 of the plate coins in the second edition of the SCD book (and thus to this website). Many of these medals were and still are quite rare, with some being "unique." It appears that the plate coin photos for the second edition of the SCD book were used with this website.

Jeff Shevlin took the photos at my house on the Saturday after the 2006 ANA in Denver. We spent 13 hours in the basement taking photos and "talking So-Called Dollars." There were 10 double row boxes and over 700 different H&K numbers! I don't recall how many total photos that we took that day, but I recall that it was over 1,000!

At the time almost all of the Ostheimer SCD pieces were wrapped in tissue paper and stored in paper 2X2 envelopes. Jeff would be photographing one medal, I would be unwrapping the next piece, and then I would put the one just photographed back in the tissue paper and envelope. While doing this we'd talk and Jeff would comment on the medal, rarity, etc.

The tissue paper in the envelopes was "perfectly crisp" for the majority of these medals (meaning untouched for over 40 years!).

Here's a couple of rare SCDs from the Ostheimer-Perkins Collection, H&K-11 and H&K-11d, both struck on White Metal planchets.

Great post and history! It would have been amazing to have the experience of opening and viewing those pieces! I would have loved to have been there. I agree the variety is amazing and you just never come across some of them.

The photos on the websites are great but could be higher resolution like TrueViews and photos posted by some here. It would be cool to have high resolution photos posted. I wonder if PCGS could be convinced to grade/TrueView the Ostheimer collection for free. I think having TrueViews could help generate more interested in SCDs.

And thanks to @jonathanb for mentioning the site is up again. The research has been very interesting!
