As a shop owner and online box breaker I am disappointed. It's not right to handle any vintage packs that way for a customer. Him claiming the product can't have fingerprints due to the surface was incorrect. I have wiped many fingerprints/ things off the surface of a 1986 Fleer card.

In fairness to him it's not like we have a lot of videos for him to watch beforehand. My advice would be every card gets put in a card saver. For $2k the three minutes to do it makes sense. Each person doing this isn't planning on making $ on the break. They want to be a part of a cool experience and the chance to hit MJ. Dial down trying to impress the folks who know zero about the product watching and just focus on the actual paying customers. Just my opinion.

I don't even understand the premise of these kind of breaks.
If I'm paying 2K a pack nobody is opening it for me. I'm surprised
there are people who would actually be willing participants.

Our group breaks here are 100% better. You actually get intact packs
and you have the choice of opening them or not.

    +1

A main part of the reason why we open vintage packs despite the long odds of coming out ahead is the thrill of actually opening a pack that hasn't been opened for decades. Why would anyone pass up that experience and have someone else who isn't financially contributing to the endeavor enjoy that best part?

  • 100% same. I really do not get paying money so someone else can break it. Furthermore, You really do not get the best look at the card so who knows if you get the right card out of the pack or not. Way too many variables in a business/hobby that has quite a few dishonest people. In no way am I saying this guy is dishonest, but, there is a reason you rarely get a pack that has not been tampered with on eBay. Some shady individuals out there.

None of those Jordans are 10s

The best one is still off left to right, it's probably a 9

The other two are both off as well, probably 8s

  • the way he was handling those cards was atrocious ! lol i mean did you guys see how when he putting them down on the table as if they were cards off a poker table , he was bending them while placing them onto the table i was like wow lol

These guys are certainly breaking bad.

First, he numbered the packs after the randomization of names. So he knows where the names are slotted, then he slots the packs. Normally, I wouldn't care so much about this, but he's breaking one of the most sequenced boxes in the history of unopened. Assuming some of the buyers are "friends and family" because they only had about 14 takers at the end of the national.

Second, the box disappears off camera for awhile. WTH? The #1 rule of online breaking is SHOW the box/packs the entire time for the viewer. These guys are either incompetent, or clueless. Are they replacing packs? shuffling packs? inserting packs? have no idea. Would never use this firm.

I am very intrigued by breaks. My son and I spent some time at the national at the breaking stations, but didn't pull the trigger. We watch Layton Sports cards on youtube and they seem legit. We're getting close, but the level of trust has to be skyhigh for us. We don't care for the theatrics or drama, just be transparent and professional.

There are many of us that have never participated in a break and probably never will. I just don't see how anyone who bought a spot other than those that pulled a Jordan can feel good about this break. This is a landmark set and the only cards that got respect were the Jordan's. There are plenty of packs that were losers but you might have had a 50% or higher recovery ratio but instead every card was treated like a common. The fact that three Jordan's were pulled helps with authentication which is great but knowing it's a huge money loser once broken trying to help those who bought spots should be a top priority. This was a lose, lose. Collectors lost and the breaker lost. Just think of all the cards you can buy at $154 apiece. Just handled like 1988 Topps commons. Not good.

    Speechless.

  • I will say...it is rather entertaining watching packs get busted live.

I think where breaks have an advantage is a case like Panini National Treasures Basketball. At $4K, it's a big money loser to buy the case, but we'll pay $250 for "pick your team" GS Warriors.

For 86/87 Fleer packs at $2K, this break was entirely botched. It's suspect they even sold the entire 36 packs at $2K each.

I clicked on the Youtube link to read the comments and see if the breakers replied to all the people criticizing their break, they didn't. But someone there mentioned that Evan Mathis spent $20K on 10 packs from this box and from what i saw,his best pull was an off center Jordan sticker.

The big boys with money know the risks. I am sure he has already moved on...

20K to Evan is like $200 to most of us here, lol..

Oh i know this just thought it weird when he could have bought a box while BBCE still had them.

I wish Evan bought the whole box and made a guest appearance on PackGeek to rip it.

The allotment of the packs would have me concerned. That should've been beyond reproach.

Wow, considering the time and effort for this break (website, custom logo, t-shirts, setting up at National, multiple social media feeds, etc.), the seem to have skipped some of the most important parts of doing a break like this.

I'm guessing they're next break may not be so successful.

These types of breaks, where the "investors" don't actually break the pack, really only make sense when you open a single pack and slots are paid on a per card basis (like the '55 Bowman pack they are planning to break in the future).

  • There was also talk of them breaking a 1952 topps set a while back IRC

@vintagefun For the record - Evan has an open invitation, anytime he'd like to join me for a PackGeek video ;)

what did those jordans grade out??

  • I just recently started participating in online box breaks. I’ve enjoyed it and got some hits but yes, the breakers treat the cards so poorly!

I watched this again. That breaker acted like a complete a-hole. Ugh.
