On vacation in Florida and noticed this shiny piece in my change. Guess someone else is not a fan of this design either. :D

From the pic I can't tell for sure that it's a proof.

Yours may one of those Uncirculated (Non-Proof) S mint circulation quality quarters that I have heard about.

We get (impaired) proof coins in the register till occasionally.

Business strike S mint. They are very nicely produced and almost prooflike, but not proof. I think this is one of those.

Nice find. Earlier today my son found two S-mint Jefferson nickels from the 1990s among some spare change. I was never that lucky at his age.

I have yet to see that coin circulating. It looks like a giant lizard with turkey wings.

That's what a Tom looks like when he is taking off, as he gets into flight his feet will tuck up into his body.

Don't have turkeys here, I don't think. At least have never seen a wild one in years of hiking around the desert.

    thanks,

I think it's a great design; Ithey are quite common in circulation around here. (Not the S mints obviously)

    Ok, my bad I'm guessing.
I don't keep up on moderns.
Saw the S Mintmark and just assumed that it had to be a Proof.
    Doh :#

Average mintages for the "S" uncirculated quarters are now 1.1 million or less for each design. I occasionally order designs I like from the Mint at about 35 cents each in bags of 100. I consider them a low-risk speculation.

I'm still not sure why they're not showing up in the annual mint sets.

Even here on the East Coast, I have been finding some S mint circulation coins... always surprises me... Cheers, RickO

Quetzalcoatl , the Haida Raven. Khaleesi's photobomb of Mark's palm tree........

    We get a luded-out bronto being molested in-flight by a 1899 1c.

Perhaps CAC refuses to sticker these on esthetic grounds.

    Discuss ? >:)

There are lots of wild turkeys in the NJ-NY-CT suburbs. They have a really dramatic vertical launch that should show up somewhere on youtube.

Beginning in 2012 the Mint began offering circulation-strike rolls and bags of S-mint quarters on its website, along with the D-mint and P-mint quarters previously offered. I believe $10 rolls are $18.95 and 100-coin bags are $34.95, a modest premium above face value. These coins are not included in the annual mint sets, nor are any released directly to circulation. Some collectors open the rolls and bags looking for high-grade examples, and sell or spend the rest. Mintages ranged from 1.3 million to 1.7 million each in 2012, now they're down to about 1.1 million for each design. Some albums have spaces for these "S" mint coins, some don't.

    Thanks Overdate,

Checked the Mint's site, missed this since I don't purchase rolls or bags.
Will have to find a source for singles for my Album. Off to the BST...

They are nice coins, better than normal business strikes. I got some early date sets from Littleton Coin, believe it or not, on a promotion they were running.

They are truly lazy. The last time I bumped into a gang of turkeys while jogging, they almost ate me alive.
