It has to be that spot above the date. I was advised by another poster here that sending it in to get the little secure stickie on the slab is a mistake as these coins come under more scrutiny than they would otherwise be subjected to. I was advised by this person that the best way to go is first send the coin in to get the grade (under no circumstances go the secure option)
and then go in a second time for variety attribution. What say you??

Not buying that story. Looking at the Truview it looks like damage or a lamination above and below CENTS on the reverse. Look at that area. I bet that's what they saw. Just my 2c.

Sorry you didn't get the straight grade, that's the way the cookie crumbles unless you get Anacs to like it. Big bucks coins = big scrutiny. Money doesn't grow on trees.

That looks like several small laminations to me.

I have come into some very interesting information that I wanted to share here. This is from another member who first sends his variety coins via economy submission to get the straight grade. Under no circumstances does he go for the
SECURE stickie as these coins receive much more scrutiny. Once he gets the grade he is satisfied with he sends the coin back to get the variety. Makes sense to me. This coin is on the way back and will soon be visiting the crack-out station in my garage and then onto anacs. I will post the grade here when it comes back. Best of luck to all in their submissions!

    Without a doubt, lamination.

should a minor mint made lamination be considered DAMAGE??

I'm not well versed in TPG's guidelines but I'd think not.

You paid them for their opinion. I think they view it as damage and not multiple laminations. PCGS offers Mint error service where a coin with a lamination in certain cases can receive a straight grade and a notation. But in this case they view it as some type of damage. You could roll the dice again but the same people will probably see it again. High dollar coins probably get looked at closer. It's unfortunate but the coin is what it is. ANACS is tougher these days than they are imho on coins with issues. I would just sell it as is in the PCGS slab.

He could also try NGC and ICG, both would take a fresh look. Also I would more efficient shipping options than registered. I have never lost an express.

ANACS has slabbed one 1913 type one 3 1/2 legger in MS65 and another in AU58.

The slab came back to today and it gets more confusing.
here is the slab and the tru view
which says there was a spot removed? Good grief
it has to be the lil spot above the date.

Well that is interesting. They must just use DAMAGE as a generic term in the submission tracking. How does one identify a removed spot?

They removed the obv spot but not the ones on the rev? I like the one in the "O" in "OF." Looks like an eyeball. What a great identifier for the coin!

bummer - with giant blow-up I see what could be pitting/corrosion above the 3 in date, small pvc in hair behind eye, and lamination/damage on reverse near E C of five cents

  • BUFFNIXXBUFFNIXX Posts: 2,727 ✭✭✭✭✭

After having some time to think about this I now agree with the grade and attribution on this slab. The spot in question is right above the 3 in the date and it is prominent. So as is it is an MS60. Not a bad pick up for $125. And I will just leave it where it is since it goes into my personal collection now. Never ever thought I would own one of these. Alls well that ends well i guess!!

They removed one spot but left that? That's crazy.

It's been a long road for you, and I'm glad you reconciled your dilemma. Just goes to show what a little knowledge and research about coins can do for a collector.
