    As stated above, the planchet is fine. It is the die that struck the planchet that's shot.

    Some coins are just plain "Interesting"

    For many years during the 60's, 70's and 80's the Mints motto was, "If it vaguely resembles a coin meant for circulation, put that coin into circulation." Don't sweat the small stuff.

    That's a very nice example of a plain old wore out die.

    the die was pretty well worn out by the time this coin was minted

    I agree with the above posters....this is very common with 1971 and 1972 Kennedies.

    This die is fresh as a daisy compared to a few of the dies that made 1966 quarters. Some of these dies were set at very low pressure to minimize wear and then they were still used long past their useful life. A lot of these coins have no more detail than a VG coming off the dies.
