US Proof sets - Question

Hi
Although i have bought 3 US proof sets (1980's) in the past i'm totally in the dark regarding proof sets.
Does the colour (Green, Blue, Red & Purple) of the slab mean anything?
Any specific years to search for that may be of any importance?
Thanks in advance

Just design changes in the packaging over the years is the only reason for the different types colors. In the more recent years it signifies clad or silver but that important piece of info is also listed on the packaging anyway.
With very few exceptions they are terrible investments. Recent prior year sets are available below original cost in many cases.
I still buy them every year, though - don't ask me why but I do.
Thank you very much for your answers ... i also got the idea of the sets not worth much due to the lack of interest to reply to my question. Almost phoned the seller to cancel our appointment.
I'm from Africa as mentioned, more into World coins or Darkside.
Think i will still buy all the sets ... still good looking coins and interesting to compare, especially the proof Quarters.
Thanks again for your answers.
I stopped buying the proof and mint sets years ago.... storage space is one factor. I have all the ones I did purchase and they just sit in a box. I did think about starting again with the SHQ's..getting the silver sets, but never did start. Cheers, RickO
I have thousands of proof sets, 40's through 90's. They make no monetary sense as most have lost their values. The earlier ones, however held and increased in value (1954 and older). If you look at the numbers minted it begins to make a lot of sense as to why they are so cheap.
Enjoy them for they are pretty.
