FRIDAY = METAL PORN

WeissWeiss Posts: 9,935 ✭✭✭✭✭

I've been addicted to mid-century Mexican (and to a lesser degree central/south American) silver lately. I was fortunate to add a few pieces at very low premiums in the last few days. LOVE the 1949 Mexican "Onza", with its weight stated in grains, grams, and troy ounces!

Any interesting pick-ups this week, or images you saw that made your heart skip a beat?

    Good metal pics everyone! I was hoping to participate today, but my tracking number shows that my package will not arrive until Monday. So, until next week...I will enjoy what others have picked up this week.

    Those queens beasts are simply stunning! They are probably my favorite government issue silver on the market.

    I'd be trying to get that $100, ha!

    Yep...time to cash that in for cash.... :D Or is it worth more as a collectible since the Crabtree mint is now defunct? Cheers, RickO

    Some self mined Black Hills placer gold. Once processed, anything under a certain mesh gets melted into a glob. Thus is about 26 grams I think.

    @asheland, that is awesome. German?

    Check this out. Listed as Lazarus Posen German 800 Gilt Silver Aesthetic Movement Creamer & Sugar Bowl
    Certainly similar if not the same maker.

    I have no idea of its value. I paid melt. I live up here in, Paradise so this one is a bit special to me as I know of the players involved. It's a small town and I hope it stays that way :)

    I have fond memories of a lunch at Mountain Mikes. I always liked that little part of the world.

    @Weiss
    The "Onza", with its weight stated in grains, grams, and troy ounces would make a great 'pocket' piece for when you need to convert between units :smile:

    Successful transactions with : MICHAELDIXON, Manorcourtman, Bochiman, bolivarshagnasty, AUandAG, onlyroosies, chumley, Weiss, jdimmick, BAJJERFAN, gene1978, TJM965, Smittys, GRANDAM, JTHawaii, mainejoe, softparade, derryb

    Bad transactions with : nobody to date

    @asheland... That is a great item... where did you find that? Antique shop? Yard sale? Or online auction? Cheers, RickO

    @Weiss Thank you for posting that! I've been comparing to similar items to try and narrow down who might have made my basket and I agree it's very similar! I also saw this set:
    silverperfect.com/Inventory/rare%20hollowware/jherzcofsetdetail.html
    By Julius Herz and now I'm not sure because they both look like they could have been the maker...
    I'm kind of leaning more towards your suggestion.

    @ricko Thanks! I picked it up at a large antique mall in Tryon, NC. I've never had any luck with that location, but was very surprised to find this on Saturday. It was $15.00 plus tax, a whopping 16.01 out the door! It weighs 533 grams! (I'm taking it to my friend this Saturday to scan it with the X-Ray gun and also will put it on the PMV under the Canada-800 setting to confirm for certain that it's 800 fine.
    I'm 99% sure already that it's good silver as the look and feel it totally correct as solid silver.

    This basket is entirely handmade, too. A very cool find for sure. :)
    This stuff is out there in those antique malls if you are persistent and constantly look for it.

    @ricko You'll score a piece of sterling eventually...

    @Weiss I just looked around online at Lazarus Posen pieces and I'm pretty much convinced that's the maker.
    You're good! I hadn't discovered that maker in my searches.

    @asheland.... I have scored a couple... No great bargains, but nice .... I am looking for a real nice sterling tankard... traditional style... I will find one... That is what is nice about this kind of search, no rush, just want one. I can wait for the piece that pleases me... I have a great RAF tankard...not silver, English Pewter made in Sheffield, that I got while in the Navy at the RAF club.... I would like to find one in Sterling, same style. Cheers, RickO

    @ricko those tankards are nice, I want one eventually, too.
    Watch ebay and perhaps one will come along that's nice and priced reasonably.

    I want an 18th century one, and, like you, I am in no hurry. Patience is a plus when collecting this stuff.

    Thanks. Im starting to go ahead and post some pictures. Haven't really done much photo posting basically out of privacy concerns. But a few should be ok.

    The metal block is actually a 50lb weight with built in handle used to certify shipping scales I found at antique store for 25 dollars. I use it all the time! The horseshoe was just something I had in arms reach to get the mold the proper level. I was hitting it with my cutting torch and when I took off my eye shields I thought the glow looked neat so I whipped out my phone and snapped a shot before it cooled.

    In order to get the gold to flow in the mould like a bar one would need a kiln.

    I've found keeping fine gold around can be a mistake if you drop or spill it, an ingot you can recover....I may re-form it someday into a nicer shape but I'm still adding to it now and them.
