RE Capped Bust Half G-T-C : ICG -> PCGS ~ GRADE POSTED

This is an 1838 RE, Capped Bust Half, Lg Letters that was in an ICG holder graded AU58. After purchasing the recently posted 1835 bust quarter and another coin at the Willimantic CT show in 2006, I was able to do some subsequent business with that dealer. It enabled me to purchase some other pieces that included this one. I sent it in as a part of a quarterly crossover special. Post your guesses for what happened, or what you think of the coin.

I'll just say it's a very nice coin that ICG's 58 couldn't have missed by much.
Wow, a gorgeous coin and highlighted by some nice photography as well. I'll guess AU58+, although I wouldn't be surprised if it came back a 62.

I have had some IGC coins upgrade well. The surfaces look clean, if the luster is all there, why not 63? Depends on how they treat the change in toning on the cheek and breast, if they deem it to be rub, then a solid 58, but that will depend on the luster and whether there are luster breaks or not.........

Did not Cross...Looks like a details coin to me. Tis a nice looking coin but from the pictures looks like it has a light cleaning or something along those lines.
58/61/62 are all quite possible. Some slight rubbing throughout the eagle's right wing....none of that precludes a MS62 grade. I'd guess MS61 because it has the overall sharpness and look of an UNC coin. The field luster is not full but that's not needed today for a 61/62 coin either.
well looking at the coin there is slight wear to the back eagle's wing. I tend to think is a 58+.
Funky look on cheek, not sure how that translates on grade, anywhere from 55-62. If it is old holder better chance. I'm not sure what criteria they are using on Bust coins there vs. PCGS/NGC. I would rather have light cleaning than too darkly toned or rough surfaces in a straight graded coin.
Nice coin which should grade. If the graders are grumpy AU58, otherwise...MS62. Very nice coin!
Definitely a possible range of grades from that picture... However, from the OP's statement, I suspect a surprise is coming.... not sure what that will be, but looking at the picture I would say 62... Cheers, RickO

I like it as a 58 shot 58+.
The uniform cream/brown look suggests re-toning.
I wouldn't be surprised to see it in any holder from 55-62.
However, I would probably expect a 58 grade.

ill go with a 58 as well. if it comes back better then way cool
Very nice coin. And your threads are serve as an important wake up call that should remind collectors to look at the coin. In looking at a dealer's case, eyes should be focused on what is in a holder before looking at the holder or grade. This coin seems to be an example of what can easily be overlooked if plastic is the focal point.
The obverse carries this coin in a big way with the reverse, in my view, holding back the grade. 58+ seems most probable. Keep in mind, all we have are images.

This one did cross from ICG AU58 to PCGS AU58. In regard to amwldcoin and Elmhurst, this piece may have had a light cleaning at some point in its past but it was not harsh and was acceptable to both grading services. Most comments leaned to the AU range. Thank you for your guesses and comments.

Not saying you have a bad coin; I just got burnt on something that looked similar.
Nice eye, nice cross....looked 58 all day long to me.
