The longcross coinage took the ends of the cross in the coinage out to the rims as it was conjectured that people that had been clipping the coins would not clip into the cross. It really didn't stop clipping, it was a deterrent only. As opposed to HIII's shortcross coinage clipping at least was much more evident.
