These are pretty cool. It appears they were designed by Julio Kilenyi, who was a well-known and quite active sculptor in the early-to-mid twentieth century. Possibly my favorite work by Kilenyi is his 1937 Lincoln Tunnel Dedication medal though his 1932 Los Angeles Olympic Games work is quite well known, too. Your pieces also appear to have been struck by Whitehead & Hoag and this was a major corporate player in the button, advertising and medallion field from the late-nineteenth to the mid-twentieth centuries. Unfortunately, it is my understanding that when W&H was bought out by a competitor in the late-1950s that the competitor destroyed all of the records and dies that had been retained by W&H. Thus, 60+ years of button, advertising and medallion history was scattered and lost.
In honor of the memory of Cpl. Michael E. Thompson
Great pieces of family history.... and the medals are nicely done. Cheers, RickO
