Hi all. I was going through a roll of pennies and this goldish yellowish 1974 penny stood out. It looks like it's been spray painted because the color is so different and almost unnatural. Anyone know of any strange pennies that year? I read a few forum entries but no answer just speculation.

Sometimes the cents take on a brassy yellow coloration.
Also could be a bit of toning.
I'm unaware of 1974 cents toning differently than other years---at least I haven't seen any that stand out in my memory.

  • Thank you.

Occasionally cents are flash plated, with gold or silver.... We did that as kids... and later, when I worked in an industry that did a lot of plating, people often gold plated coins... (it was forbidden, but they did it anyway)...I have seen some 'gold' cents, even in circulation. Not enough gold to matter though....Cheers, RickO
