I don't have a Cherry Pickers at home and PCGS does not list this. Is it a known variety?

Not an expert, but at first glance it seems a lot of the "S"s looked similar: http://www.pcgscoinfacts.com/CoinImages.aspx?s=4808 - very first coin (MS66) and fourth (MS65) and again on a MS63... etc. - leads me to believe it's a common error, though some have called it out: https://www.collectors.com/coin/key-date-1895-s-s-over-s-error-barber-dime-us-coin-double-s/3856812953155485746

@Jinx86 seems close - I could not find any noted varieties, other than an 1893-S that actually notes a "dramatically repunched mintmark" (I say it's a mess): http://www.pcgscoinfacts.com/Coin/Detail/145288

If anyone has more info, please advise - I'm just a web dev, so I am little to no help on the matter, but am interested. (-: Thanks for the share - I love that old coin (I fancy coins with "life" - benefit: typically cheap).

EDIT: A competitor notes "There is often strike doubling on the primary S, which is not a separate punching." https://www.ngccoin.com/coin-varieties/barber-dimes/1893-s-s-10c-fs-501-1977/ - maybe related? #inquiringminds

Sorry, but looks like strike doubling or machine doubling. Not an RPM.

I agree with Dimeman, looks like machine doubling. Especially so with the second pic you posted.

    I also think strike doubling.

definitely, I was the 'discoverer' of the Barber half dollar, 1909 S, inverted MM.

and a number of other RPM's, MPD's, and RPD's- in dimes, quarters, and half dollars.
