Speared Bison 2005-d Nickel

logger7logger7 Posts: 8,510 ✭✭✭✭✭

I spoke to a dealer friend who got one of these back from grading in gem condition: http://www.pcgscoinfacts.com/Coin/Detail/84159

Is there much of a following on this coin? Thanks Jaime Hernandez for the article.

The 2005 Bison had a number of various minor errors. The Speared Bison was the result of a well placed die gouge that passed though the buffalo thus the name.

Like many modern coins there was significant initial interest but it has waned with time.

Since the speared bison has been recognized by PCGS and NGC its value has held up better than other errors in the Bison series.

Really too bad really as there were a number of minor but easily recognized errors in the 2005 Bison series.

Here are a few of the minor errors seen in the 2005 Bisons.

The defects in the 5th coin were not a one off but rather found in 100+ coins from same 1,000 coin bag.

As I recall in picture 1 the missing grass was called "Hungry Buffalo" the result of die wear and polishing.

Number 2 was a clashed die that I think was nick named "Spear Point"

Number 5 was obviously some form of damage to die but never explained exactly what kind of damage.
Nick named "Buckshot Jefferson" as I recall.............

It was puffery. Those things aren't, imho and some others, worth anything more than a "normal" version. Seriously.
Buy it at your own risk as I don't think there is a lot of market for it.

Forum member found some, puffed them up on here and to HRH and was able to get PCGS to "recognize" them.

The "Wounded Eagle" for the golden dollar carries a bit more street cred.

Buying raw, rainbow toned, coins from questionable ebay sellers carries more street cred than a "speared bison".....

As with most 'flash in the pan' errors, I looked for it when first reported... found one... I think it got mixed with change again and spent it... Cheers, RickO

Say what you will... I like 'em and have 'em both in my collection. The "other" varieties for the 2005 Buffalo series (P & D) are relatively minor, but some people collect 'em.

    This.

Anomalies in coinage have always stimulated an interest among collectors. Yes, there is certainly "puffery," but such items findable in pocket change and identifiable to the unaided eye have been a part of what makes the hobby fun. I'm not sure that a missing mint mark should essentially be of greater interest to a collector than the visually-interesting product of a cracked or worn die.

Missing mint mark? I have one of those too 1982 No P Dime. Those modern proofs missing their mint mark (S) bring in some BIG bucks!

Collect what you like. Disparage that and those which you don't. That's the mantra

How many of you collect the " three legged buffalo nickel" which is just a die polishing error.

The Speared Bison is a die gouge error with fantastic placement.

The Speared Bison is WAY, WAY rarer that the 3 legged buffalo nickel .... and almost always in a much higher mint state.

  • 2manycoins2fewfunds2manycoins2fewfunds Posts: 3,036 ✭✭✭

I believe the 2005 'Hungry Buffalo' where grass was missing from between buffalo's legs was also the result of excessive die polishing.

  • BuffaloIronTailBuffaloIronTail Posts: 7,479 ✭✭✭✭✭

ErrorsOnCoins .....................I'll definitely concede the "fantastic placement". It's also a fun nameable error, and also "just" a die gouge error.

Please elaborate on the "rarity" thingy.

I'd rather have my Buffalo hobble along on three legs than my Bison speared (unless an Indian did it for food).

Buff, as I understand it, there are only about 900 examples of the Speared Bison.

657 presently attributed through PCGS...NGC does not recognize the variety???

    Please God...oh please God
    Don't let her appear.

Some coins are just plain "Interesting"

I only have one due to PCGS adding it to the registry. I would have no interest otherwise, and got it for around the cost of grading.

    ErrorsOnCoins - no disrespect, but
    since the Speared Buffalo appeared,
I've never had one inquiry, via phone,
    email, coin show, etc. for the coin;
plenty of offers to sell them to me however.

It is a nice die gauge, I agree, but I think
out of the 900 known specimens, there
are only 32 collectors for it.

    ..............................

Since you chimed in what is your opinion on the cause of the surface defects on pictured coin?
There were a hundred + identical coins in a $50 bag of 2005 Bisons.

Isn't it unusual to have this kind of damage on a die?
