My rare Overton find.

Last year, I found this O.148 at a small show. It was in literally the first case by the entrance, and had apparently been sitting out undetected for hours as I went in around 2pm.
Long story short, I turned down an offer from a dealer because I thought I was being lowballed. In hindsight maybe not as the market for varieties is very demanding on condition and holder.
I made an attempt to cross it over to any old grade at our hosts company on an econ submission along with a local dealers stock. No bueno due to cleaning, but it was only tried once.
So what you you guys think the market value is in this holder versus a P-genuine XF (worst case) holder?
Would you crack and send it raw? The goal is to maximize the market value.

Crack it out. Send it to PCGS and request their variety service. Get the Overton number on the label.
Worst case is it comes back with the wrong Overton number in a VF details holder.
Best case is it comes back with the correct Overton number in an AU details holder.
Value is dependent on venue and the audience for an R6+ (assuming it is an O-148 and not not an O-131 or O-143 (no offense, I just don't have the time to verify one way or the other). In March 2015 an NGC AU-50 (cleaned) sold for $7050.
Good luck!

Looks like a candidate for a protracted sojourn nekkid in an envelope on a sunny windowsill. Heck of a find in any case, congrats!
Sheridan Downey is THE expert dealer for capped bust half dollar rarities, and the max value would be obtained in one of his auctions. He knows all examples and most of the owners. I believe this is a R.6+ rarity now. Edit - I also did not validate the attribution.
Good story!
This half dollar looks like an example of the 1827 O-148 die marriage to me. Congratulations on finding this very rare marriage!

lots of good advice in this thread already. And I don't mind this advice that kaz wrote.
I'd probably cross at a min grade vf35 with variety attribution and see what happens.

Try again. It will eventually grade problem-free. I don't see any obvious cleaning hairlines that would doom it forever.
I've had the best luck with cracking and submitting raw. I too might sit it on a windowsill for a long while before getting it slabbed.
Looks 45-50 to me. I'd guess its value around $13-16k in a PCGS problem-free holder.
Lance.
P.S. It is a genuine O.148. Nice going!
(edited to revise estimated value upward)
Very nice find.... Good advice above and well worth the shot at crossing.... I would submit raw with the variety attribution request... Cheers, RickO
Why not send it back to Anacs and get an AU-50 with the correct attribution. Sell it as that. An Anacs AU-50 is worth more than a PCGS cleaned coin.
Also, PCGS does not like when you try and cross a 5-10K coin at economy level.
