1840 50C Obv. Die Crack FS-401 Reverse of 1839 (EDS) (revisited - TrueView image added)

I received this one in the mail today and I inquired the variety type through a well known subject matter expert with the following images and he is in agreement that this is a 1840 50C Obv. Die Crack FS-401 Reverse of 1839 in it's Early Die Stage...and a new Top Pop for the variety by a rather large margin (a VG8 presently resides alone on CoinFacts for the variety http://www.pcgscoinfacts.com/Coin/Detail/511597). I will send her off after I gather a few more to attribute, although the old solid gasket holder is hard to let go of it is unfortunately a necessary sacrifice.
The Pick Up Point for the variety is the Obverse Die Break, which is rather obvious on the current PCGS Plate Coin, extending through stars five through seven. My EDS version does have the die break but it does not extend beyond the seventh star to the edge of the coin.
Thank you for your interest!

Nice!
Nice looking coin.. is that another die crack at the lower left running by the base? Cheers, RickO
Very cool and quite rare, as you have indicated. Congrats on acquiring it.

I've handled only one of this variety, the later die state, a PCGS F-15 about 6 years ago:

Thanks for your comparison image Rich!
Yes, the die crack on the viewers left, along the stone that Liberty is seated upon, is quite common the Seated Liberty Half Dollar series.

She is a beauty indeed ~ Certainly the nicest WB-9 I have seen and thanks for the great images !
You're welcome! I looked up my notes on the coin and at that time Bill Bugert said he had seen 5 of them including mine.
In Bill's new book "A Register of Liberty Seated Half Dollar Varieties, Volume V, Philadelphia Mint, 1839 to 1852", he estimates the EDS as an R-3 and the LDS as an R-6.

I showed this one around to a few dealers at the Denver last week, seems that they were in disagreement as to whether or not PCGS would attributive the variety and those that would consider it wanted the variety on the label. I dropped this one off at the PCGS table and a few others on Thursday past, the order has not posted yet.

All varieties that are submitted to PCGS, even those submitted at shows, go back to PCGS for the variety attribution part. That is why it will take a little while to get this coin evaluated by PCGS.

I saw last night that PCGS does agree with the variety and has been updated to reflect the Obv. Die Crack FS-401 Reverse of 1839 http://www.pcgscoinfacts.com/Coin/Detail/511597/55 No images yet from Phil & Co., but a major victory!
