The coin you are embarrassed to admit you are seeking....

We all like to project that we are “sophisticated” collectors, seeking true rarity and quality. (Some are...many of us really aren’t. I’ll raise my hand.).
So, what coin are you currently seeking that you don’t advertise for fear that someone will scoff at your quest? The coin that novices desire, but is really beneath your normal desires and status?
I’ll admit....I’m looking for a nice 1921-D Morgan dollar. It’s a “who cares” coin, that is easily ignored by sophisticated collectors.
But, I’ve decided to whittle my “never finished, lost interest” set of Morgans down to a “Type Set” of Morgans. It will entail one of each mint mark, one from each decade, one of each major design change, (i.e. 8tf, 7/8tf, 7tf, 1921), and one of each surface quality, (normal, PL, and DMPL). Any one coin can potentially fulfill more than one category....
So, it’s quite obvious that the 1921-D fills a couple of those slots quite nicely, and is actually a REQUIREMENT for such a set: New design of 1921, the only D mintmark, and the only year of the 1920’s decade. It also happens to be one of the 8 or 10 coins I never got around to buying when building my set. So, seeking one I am.
Of course, given my usual low cost, high quality requirements, I’m looking for that MS-65 in a MS-64 holder. It may take a while.
Anything you want to get off your chest? They say the first step is admitting your problem.

I've always wanted a Cleveland Commem.
It fits your critera.
It's like the third most common Classic Commemorative and no shortage, etc but I've been a fan of the reverse design.
Finally got one a few weeks ago.

My Washington Quarter Registry set...in progress
I'm looking for one of those brass pornographic tokens.
Side of beans as a bonus!

A couple of circulated dimes for me. 1937 & 1938 in PCGS AU58 please.
Yeah I'm one of those Everyman types.
I am looking for a 1974-S NNC PR70 DCAM SILVER Eisenhower Dollar.
I put together a complete set of IKE Dollars in NNC holders. All high grade. I never found a 1974-S Silver.
I have no delusions that these are accurately graded coins but I purchased all of them for $6 - $20 ea so it was a just for FUN Set.
If anyone has a NNC 1974-S Silver please contact me.
You might have better luck looking for a SGS example. NNC was a little better at mixing the grades up (not that the grades from them are particularly meaningful).
@Grandam
Contact Centsles. He might make you one... literally.
I like 1928-S Large S Cents.........they intrigue me.

at one time I was toying with the idea of cornering the market on 1978 PR70DCAM quarters..... At current sell prices it would cost less than 15,000 to buy them all (500 and something pop)~~~~ it would cost almost 9000 just to get 500 more graded if found to replace them... But I figured someone would catch on to me and start raising price so i never put the plan into action
Successful trades.... MichaelDixon,
An off center bust 1795 DB dollar.
Why is that embarrassing? Because I had one that just "bothered" me but now it looks like I should have tolerated it as it seems Draped Bust dollars are now the MUST HAVES of the numismatic circus.
Sooo..... now I'm looking for a F-VF.
...
If we were all the same, the world would be an incredibly boring place.

I have a couple of embarrassing quests going on but the one that's giving me the most frustration is a 2009-P dime! I know it's a "nothing coin" but I make it a rule to collect current issues from pocket change I receive from shopping and this one has eluded me. I have an excellent set of Roosevelts from '46 to '16--the early ones in UNC or proof, the later ones (from pocket change) EF or UNC--but this little guy is driving me nuts! The 2009s are a low mintage as far as Roosevelts go, but still...I have the D so I know those little buggers are out there.
And no, I don't consider cherry-picking through rolls fair-play.
When simpleness and duty tender it."
I do the same with change I get and 2009 contains a blank hole in every denomination and mint mark except the 2009P Nickel... I have found a few cents but none in any kind of pleasing condition
Successful trades.... MichaelDixon,
I have thought about this in the past,,,,, never did it until just now. Thanks for the prod,,,,,, hopefully he will answer me.
1873 Closed "3" $2.50 and 1895 $2.50. Both are fairly common but are not so common in MS62 (or better) PCGS/CAC.

presidential dollars in uncirculated bank rolls.....
Slabbed blue toned Jefferson. These were available many years ago and discussed on these forums, but I neglected to pick one up. I still look for them but haven't seen one in years.
I owned two of the sixteen or so MS 1886 VAM 20's.
Thought about cornering that market as well.
It's up there with the tough part of the 1878 8tf VAM14 series
Cheap by comparison. Figured it would cost about $30K
I'm a sucker for a well struck 1938d Buffalo Nickel in MS 65/66
Own at least four slabbed and recently sent two off to begraded
I advertise in my signature line the lowball PR grades I'm looking for for 1964 PCGS-graded Kennedy half dollars. I've been told just start cracking and submitting if I really want such low-grade proof Kennedy's.
Insert witicism here. [ xxx ]
Interesting read for sure!
I'm not actively searching for anything "un-special" but I've been known to stash away any cheap 1960-64 silver proof set in capital plastic holders... especialy if there's some slight toning on one or two of them. I've probably got 10 sets just hanging around.

I have not searched for anything specific for several years...and I have never been embarrassed about any search I have embarked upon. That makes no sense to me. I am, however, presently searching for a fairly common coin.... a 1921 Peace Dollar in reasonably nice condition - slab not required....and that would likely fit the OP's outline.... minus the embarrassment.
Cheers, RickO
