Large Cent Prices Strong in Goldberg Auction

Been watching the bidding and following the results so far.
I was outbid on everything early on, so I no longer have any skin in the game.

Forum member rays impressive Redbook collection of large cents is being sold now, following a beautiful complete collection of high grade middle date large cents from another consignor. Both fellows had an eye for high quality coins, and it shows in the prices being realized.

Has anyone won anything from this auction so far?

Having sat through the sale, I can tell you the late and middle dates were strong. There were some major declines from previous sales (Holmes 2009, Husak 2008) on the order of 50% for the early dates.

I'm surprised the early dates would show those types of declines. I was also surprised some of the colonials didn't bring stronger prices.

Goldberg always seems to have the best copper, at least Large Cents.

I lost the 3 pieces I was interested in by 150%-200% of what I was willing to pay...at the same time, I saw some stuff going real cheap, like 70% of what it should have sold for -- definitely odd to see that kind of contrast.

My colonials were very weak.

I didn't know much about the colonials being offered, but the prices realized seemed very inexpensive, relatively speaking.

I was blown away. Strong prices.

Obviously I thought so also, overall, for the large cents - but again they were quality coins, most of them in PC holders, many with stickers. Even though I didn't acquire anything new, auctions like this make me better appreciate the coins I already own!

I think any federal coinage from 1793 to 1815 is just a good thing to own and a heck of a lot fun to buy! Coins that may have passed into and out of the hands and pockets of our founding fathers. Love it!!

Just found out from my dealer friend who submitted bids for me that I won 3 of the Ahumada Middle Date lots, #113--1831 N-2 PCGS 64RB CAC, lot!#136--1834 N-3 PCGS 65RB CAC and lot#137--1834 N-4 PCGS 65+BN CAC. I am very happy with these three. Had the chance to carefully view all the Ahumada Middle Date Large Cents at the EAC Convention in Phila. in April. There is no substitute for actually being able to see the coins in person before the auction. Many thanks to Glenn Onishi for lugging all those Middle Dates from Caifornia to the Philadelphia EAC Convention!l

Goldberg seems to have an "in" with a lot of the EAC collectors. They get the EAC members to show up to their auctions and get strong bids as a result.
