Review of Silver and Requests

Sorry for posting so much, but this "hobby" is kind of new to me. I did some "ping" tests on my Hawaiian Silver, weighed it, measured it, and did the same to my skeptical 1996 S Kenedy Half Dollar. OH VEY! ZE ARE BOTH OF ZE FAKES!!! The ping test on the Hawaiian Silver Rounds didn't last long enough (similar to tests I did on quarters) and one of the weights were off by one tenth of an ounce (you would think that since the silver has been untouched it would keep its weight). The measurements were correct though. I will attempt to return the silver rounds to the seller (I buy from him regularly) and ask for an exchange for some silver quarters or a return of my cash. One of the many mistakes I have made during my career, but I won't learn if I don't make mistakes.

To Local (Hawaii) collectors and dealers:
If any of you would be kind enough to sell me some Morgan Dollars for under $25 a piece I would be incredibly content. If any local Hawaii dealers have any recommendations where I can get decent collectible coins for decent prices please do say something. I am not the richest in the world, and money doesn't grow in my backyard (I'm not old enough to get a job). I did some research, and wondered, is Amazon a reliable place to purchase coins? If you also know a place where I can get these coins:

-Morgan Dollars
-Peace Dollars
-Mercury Dimes
-Pre 1964 Roosevelt Dimes
-Walking Liberty Half Dollars
-Franklin Half Dollars
-Pre 1964 Washington Quarters
-Chinese 10元 Silver Pandas

For decent prices in decent conditions please do say so. I especially love silver dimes and silver quarters, so that would be a treat.

Thank you all for your kindness and hospitality,
SB Hawaii

I like your enthusiasm, but if you aren't yet old enough to hold a job then I would strongly urge you to read more and purchase less. It appears at the moment that you are looking at ebay, Amazon and flea markets for coins, but keep in mind that none of these coins are scarce and they will always be available when you are ready. Therefore, I would suggest you read a ton and, in time, you will learn to feel comfortable on various buying platforms.

I realize that urging patience isn't a "fun" response, but it might help quite a bit in the long term. Good luck and have fun!

Amazon is overpriced for coins. Ebay auctions (not BIN's) are a better option. Bid your highest and wait to see if you win. Most of the time you will not but some times you will get what you want at your price.

good luck, and I too agree with research and reading.

  • @TomB do you mind if I ask what sort of research? I earn money by making jewelry out of recycled materials such as copper pipings, copper wire, and scrap silver kitchenware. I currently own "A Guide Book of United States Coins" by R.S. Yeoman 71st Edition 2018 and refer to it when purchasing coins. The only downside to the book is:
    1. No information about paper bank notes
    2. No information about Hawaii Silver
I do agree with you about patience though, as I normally am VERY patient. The only problem is: I go to the flea market with my best friend (he doesn't like coins too much) and I have a strict time limit on how long I can spend at the flea market. As a courtesy, I make sure that he has time to look at the things he wants to look at too. I will speak with my parents and my friend about giving me more time to bargain, research, and (briefly and unprofessionally) attempt to grade the coin I would like to purchase. Many experienced collecters have told me that the Red Book is good enough for now. Do you recommend any books I could read to learn more about coins (and paper notes)? I am a different type of collector, and do not collect from a specific set or time. Some call people like me "Silver Pickers," but I prefer the term "Valuable Numismatic Historian."

    Thanks Tom,

Everything that you need to learn about coins, (the good, the bad and the ugly) is available on this forum. Search specific subjects and you will be amazed at the information that is provided.

@bullionsilver_hawaii ....Hello Tom,...The selection of 'what' to read, will depend on your focus... there are books on Walking Liberty halfs, Mercury dimes....Morgan Dollars... you can easily find these by a quick google search. There are books on gold coins as well....just about any topic that interests you in the coin/numismatic world, has books devoted to that subject. This forum is amazingly rich with expert resources and people here share their knowledge willingly. So, ask questions, do some research - if you are truly interested in coins, you will find the research is enjoyable. Best of luck, Cheers, RickO
