Anyone run across this PCI sample / promotional holder before?

U1chicagoU1chicago Posts: 6,607 ✭✭✭✭✭

I posted this on another forum but thought there may be people on here that aren't on there.
Anyways, for those that collect sample or promotional slabs, have any of you seen this one before?

What is the correct classification, promotional holder?
Is it in the sample book yet?

That is a great one! I never knew PCI advertised the "Signature Series" that way. Jeff Oxman and Larry Briggs were two more PCI consultants that did signature slabs. There may have been one or two more but those three were the main ones. If a submitter wanted Larry to attribute a Seated Quarter, they paid extra and the coin was sent to him. He graded and did the attribution and returned it for slabbing.

I have about a half dozen different PCI sample slabs from various shows but never saw/heard of this one.

I collect samples, and I have not seen that before. Cool piece! I believe it would count as promotional. It is not in the Schwager book, I suggest contacting him.

    Thank you for the info!
    Charles Daughtrey was another expert.
I have one of the slabs with his name and he commented on this thread at MCM:

"HI folks. The PCI signed coins are indeed hand signed by me. There were over all about 200 of them made (no exact count is known) back in 2006-2007 when they were trying to clean up their act. I honestly thought they were heading into a new (and better) era when I agreed to work with them on the project. Mere months after the program started, the owner of the company died and all the equipment was sold to a new firm which is also now out of business.

The grading on these signed slabs should be somewhat accurate - I wouldn't sign the label unless the coin graded within my standard."

Jeff did a signature series for PCI? So they would send him VAMs to attribute and would slab with his signature?

    The more you VAM..

Never knew the entire story of the revived "Signature Series" labels. I thought they were only used around 1993-1997 when Revels owned the company.

I have seen one at a show when lived in Seattle... I believe I commented on it here on the forum way back then...because I did not recognize it... several members commented on it then. Cheers, RickO

So I guess "PCI" does not always stand for "Problem Coin Inside!"

Not originally. They were a quality grading service in the photo slab days and the early green labels.

They they were sold, discovered they were more attractive doing market (vs. strict ANA) grading. Sold again, the owner died and the equipment was sold off.

Yes, Jeff Oxman was part of PCI's original Signature Series. I am not sure about the logistics of attribution, however.

Anyone have all the experts? Tomaska, Oxman, Stanton, etc. That would be a cool set!
