1937 buffalo nickel, doubled die obverse, class 6 doubling on date.

here is an example of t he 1937 doubled die obverse which sports strong class 6 doubling on the date
This seems to be rarer that the 1936 doubled die obverse (of which there are 2 different class 6 doubled obverse dies)
Any one else have one of these? Seem to be hard to locate.

While I am not suggesting it, I am curious... would Nic-a-date make the doubling more visible?? Cheers, RickO

Glad you're just suggesting it, ricko, because if you use that stuff you'll nic up the date. ;)

Nic-a-date would have a detrimental affect. Most Class VI doubled dies will show varying degrees of thickness to the lettering and/or date and will show little or no notching nor will they show different distinct images (hubbings.) It's just the characteristics of that type (distended hub) of doubled die.

  • How can you tell if it's a double die

Wouldn't class 6 doubling have to be a very LDS in order to be no differentiation at all of the extremities of the numbers, such as heighth, edges and definition of the strike? It's amazing to me that this even exists. Are there any samples in higher grades or would the wear make the actual state of the doubling? Just curious.

It's most certainly not a "double" die. A double die would be two dies. It could, however, be a doublED die.

Why don't you post an image? We can't tell without a good quality image.

I would love to see an XF, AU, or Mint State example of this die variety.

Is there much of a market or premium for a coin like this?
I easily would, and could have passed this over in my own stash of old Buffaloes!
So, is the coin posted above indeed a DDO, or not?
    I am confused.

It's likely that it would be of interest only to a specialist in the series.

This is the best and most well known Class VI doubled die in the series, especially evident on the date and LIBERTY.
