UK Collector, just starting out....advice please?

RichiroRichiro Posts: 2

Hi, I've just started out trying to build a collection and to get me started I bought 71 2003 Upper Deck Pride of New York Autographed cards for £150 (approx $194) with the intention of selling them on and investing in more cards should there be any profit. I checked out others on ebay (maybe not the best indication of value?) and they had prices ranging from $5 to $10 at the lower end to $40-$60 at the upper Torre/Rizzuto end.

My question is would it be best to try and sell them individually or market them as a job lot? Or maybe even hold off on selling them for the time being? All the cards are (to my untrained eye) in excellent condition.

Any advice appreciated,
Thank you

Those aren't the type of cards that'll make big jumps in pricing, so I wouldn't hold them thinking you'll flip them in 5-10 years for a lot more money. Would be better holding vintage/hof rc's if you're looking for an investment in the long term.

Hello Richiro and welcome to the boards!

I spent five years living outside the M25 and in London from 2006 and 2011. It put a slight damper on my sports card collecting, but I was able to make board and ebay purchases and have them sent to my in-laws house. I also traveled around the UK for work, which enabled me to visit car boot's and charity shops looking for odd and old memorabilia. I picked up a mint set of 1938 John Player & Sons Cricketeer's and a number of other old (20's & 30's) Wills Footballers and miscellaneous cards. It was pretty cool to find these little treasures!

As swish54 has already mentioned, these cards may hold their value, but will not see significant moves over a short or long period. A better investment might be named star cards in the four major American sports or major and minor stars prior to 1970. I have also seen more interest in past and current European footballers here in the states as our own MLS league has added teams, and has gained more wide-spread interest.

I wish you the best in your endeavor and enjoy your time perusing these boards!

  • Hi, thanks for the advice. I thought they wouldn't make any significant gains in value I just want to make a small profit to invest in other cards.

Do you think it would be better to try and sell them individually or see if someone would buy all 71 as a collection? Thanks again.

stick with a fixed price and on higher end for a while if someone is interested they will make a fair offer.
