1904 has an assortment of peculiarities surrounding the 1 in the date punch. There are coins from all mints that have a spike on the 1 like this, and coins that have a normal looking 1. It would seem to be a chip in a die that would be used to form the actual date punch. 1904-P seems to have a disproportionate number of obverse dies that had a spiked 1. There is one variety, VAM 10, that has this spike but it is separated a little from the rest of the 1, as if the spiked date punch broke, but was still usable.
