near my docs is a city park about 6 blocks from a historic fort but have permission to do small digs at the city park if i fill the small dig holes up again. . so far ive found 2 uniform buttons from the war of 1812 and a uniform button from the upper canada militia (upper canada buttons dated around 1850-ish) besides a few newer coins and junk. going back in a few weeks to see what else can find

That sure sounds like fun. Is it easy to dig?
We have nothing like that to search here in the desert. I'd be all over something like that if I could.
Enjoy and keep us informed and would love to see pics if you can.
bob:)
Good show! btw I wish every one would fill their holes after they dig. It really helps the hobby.

Nice finds and what a great opportunity to dig there..... I also wish everyone would fill their holes... I too often see that in grassy park areas....Cheers, RickO
its good to dig here sometimes. my friend has a city permit and were allowed to dig down about 1/2 ft and only 1/4 ft wide but have to fill back in and since i worked for a landscaper i have a scraper that peels the grass back then lvls it back down afterwards.. my friends got a bag of musket balls, uniform buttons and coins dating back to the 1700s-2000's. once i get my scanner back tomorow ill load the buttons in my collection
@slimies...That is a great opportunity, and you may even find some early copper.... Best of luck. Cheers, RickO
thanks loading in a couple of buttons found on my last dig
Oh, heck yeah! My kinda site!
Found any musketballs yet?
not personally but my friend has a small bags worth.. maybe 12 musketballs or so.. im going back in 2 weeks to try another dig. been mostly coins and buttons between us. some old and some not so old..
Best of luck on your hunt... I just know there must be a copper coin or two there.... Cheers, RickO
well no more digging in the park. the friend i dig with messed it up while i was away on vacation so they took the permit away. ill need to find a new place to dig now
If you dig in a park you better leave it better than you found it or you mess it up for everyone. Slob hurt all of us.

That is a shame.... Maybe wait a while and apply for one in person. Be ready with your set of rules for conscientious care of land....Offer to demonstrate your methods....That helps... They might offer a permit restricted to you only though. Cheers, RickO
yes he dug alright but he left some of the holes open . going in july to apply for my own permit to dig. its a great place i dont wanna lose the spot
Find a new friend. Good luck getting permission to hunt by yourself.
nice buttons!!
too bad about your friend. First rule of metal detecting is to fill all holes. Hope he learns from this.
I hope he does too and i find out in july if my permit will go through to dig
Best of luck...let us know how it goes...Cheers, RickO
havent been back to the park but went to hamilton, ont and wandered around the old studebaker plant where my grandfather worked. i couldnt go inside the building so used my detector outside along the fence and the area out back and picked up a few things,, mostly fiddling change but found an old token. must have been given to the employees .
Fiddling change? I have not heard that term before.... can you clarify? Cheers, RickO
dimes, nickles, pennies , and this is the token.. its a little hard to read
Nice finds. I hope you're able to find out more information on the token.
Looks like it says 'Studebaker Corporation Centennial'...so some sort of celebratory token.... appears to be brass, but that could be the lighting. Still wondering about the term 'fiddling change'... Cheers, RickO
my art teacher used to use " fiddling change " when talking about small denominations like nickles and pennies..
the token is for studebaker's birthday i found out online,, 1852-1952, they gave the token to employees for its birthday
OK... I guess because it can be 'fiddled around with' in the pocket.... Thanks, Cheers, RickO
yep and your welcome, hoping to go on more detector finds again soon. heading to the states for the weekend coming up and staying on a friends farm
Old farms can be great detecting... that old property could have had other things there in the past. Old coins are often found in plowed fields.... old foundations may be in adjoining woods. Also, old Indian arrow points are often found as well... Cheers, RickO
am sure ill find something hopefully on the property
