I Want to Hear Your Ideas!

KellenCoinKellenCoin Posts: 1,253 ✭✭✭✭✭

Anything about the hobby in any way. Literally any ideas you have to improve the hobby, make it more interesting, draw more people in, etc. I hope to have a discussion with you and we can perhaps bring of these to fruition! If you agree with an idea or have something to add, make to sure to express that! We the people can do great things!

One of my personal ideas is an online YN-based club.
In the 90s and early 2000s there were two main YN organizations, but these both were discontinued (the Young Numismatists of America (YNA) I have done the most research on. They ended because most of their members entered college and were unable to support the club. There was also an organization called the American Association of Young Numismatists. I do not know how they ended.)
Anyways, my idea is essentially a website which can serve as an online club for Young Numismatists. YNs would be the main members, run the club and newsletter, etc. It would ideally be free or very cheap. Adults could join, but there would only be one adult moderator (the late Larry Gentile Sr. was influential in the YNA and AAYN). Every month or so, there could be an online live stream of all the board members and it would be like a local coin club meeting, but with a chat and such. There could be a program similar to the ANA's YN Dollars. Online is ideal as YNs are spread out over the country. If anyone has any other ideas, let me know!

YN's may be more likely 40 year old guys that have finally tired of computer games and facebook.

Reality is, most of us became collectors at a young age out of summer boredom. Watch daytime TV or put Lincolns into a Whitman folder......the Whitman usually won.

Whitman vs Candy Crush or Free Cell or XXXXXX....no dice.

That may be your opinion, but I am actually optimistic for the future of the hobby! It is simply that the trends have shifted. Never before has so much attention been focused towards recruiting! While there are less YNs at shows, the number of YNs on social media has increased exponentially!

As for facing Whitman off with other entertainment; while that is definitely a problem, this is the reason why we should come up with ideas to combat this! At the US Mint Forum, several ideas were presented on this topic.

KellenCoin, you are certainly much more in tune with the YN segment than I am. Hope that you are correct in your optimism.

    I was called a YN at Central States and I'm 30. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I think YouTube videos (like the videos that coin week does), memes, gifs and high quality photos would get more YN in my opinion. Maybe connecting coins with historical events? If you like history you're more likely to collect coins?

This new generation is living lift on the internet, so why not have a place where they can have a registry set that accepts both pcgs and ngc coins?
There was a time when clubs put their best coins together to form the best set each club could muster up.
Then put them on display at a larger coin show in the area.

You will never see this...especially since ngc stopped allowing PCGS coins in their sets.

@PTVETTER Great idea. A place to show off your coins. One Graded and one raw too.

The ANA could step up and do this.
In fact Laura talked to the ANA about this and I talked to one of the board members about this.

Would either of the ANA president candidates support this?

How do YN's earn money to spend on coins nowadays? We haven't had a paperboy in over 30 years. The baggers at the grocery are college kids or seniors. I went to work at 11 and now you have to be sixteen to even get hired unless it's your Mom and Dads place. I think that we have fewer YN's because of one reason that I do not have a fix for: NO INCOME, NO JOBS.

Kids can't even have a lemonade stand here without a permit from the health department....give me a break.

I do think that some sort of meeting place for YN's on the internet would be great. They sure know how to use the medium!

With the information that is now available it would be fun for them to have projects to research and complete that relates to coins/coining/collecting.

Perhaps a sponsor(s) could get involved and have essay contests with coins/books as prizes. Don't know how that would work but it might sure be fun for a YN.

Lots of projects that do not cost money but entail learning. Kind of like merit badges for the Boy Scouts?

I was thinking of something like this not long ago... Once NGC dropped the ability to use PCGS in it's registry it left a wide gap of people who collected the coin and not the holder... Sure you can cross over but at what cost and in the case where coins come back with issues it can just be a pain.

Have a third party system where NGC and PCGS could be standard.... Other TPG could have a -1 or _2 assigned if the slab is in there holder... Maybe have raw coins could have some sort of peer assigned graded with likes or dislikes to back it up.... Could just work out to be a glorified popularity contest but just some of the ideas that bounced through my head

    Successful trades.... MichaelDixon,

Personally, I would love to see this and hope that it comes to fruition.

    Why stop at 2 TPGs?

If the ANA were involved, I imagine raw coins would need to be supported.

While I support any activity involving coins, I believe there are already many YN's... they are on Instagram and Snapchat.....Perhaps an activity related to their chosen social media (i.e. those mentioned or a dedicated facebook page) would be more likely to attract attention. By the way... kids below sixteen, in this area, shovel snow in the winter and mow lawns in the summer.... weed gardens etc..... They still work to make money... Cheers, RickO
