Midlands Coin Show report

Debated driving the almost 200 miles to a small club show.
I've never done well at shows.
It's in Columbia S.C.
When the wife told me we were invited to a Kentucky Derby Party... decision was a simple "gots to go situation"
30 Tables occupied by a few dealers I have seen at other shows around the state. Looked like some local guys as well.
A real shock was the quantity of raw coins that outnumbered greatly the TPG's.
A lot of Bust Halves and Seated material. Large cents, Flying Eagles, Indian Heads outnumbered Ol' Abe 5 to 1
Was out of my element in knowledge with those series but I had a pre determined plan.
Goals...
1) Stick to the plan
2) Find a Morgan to crack out or cherry a Vam.
3) Find a Buffalo Nickel and chase that elusive MS68
4) Add to my modest circulated IHC collection
5) Stick to the plan.
A fair amount of Morgans, but many were common stuff or already premiumed up for the VAM.
Found a nicely golden toned early generation slabbed NGC Buffalo at MS66 but passed. May have even been CAC'd but a hit on the cheek gave me pause. Thought it was MS65 at best. Probably should have bought it as part of my MS68 project.
At the end of the my stay searched and found four raw, subtle toned, 1938-d Buffalo Nickels. Breaking one of my cardinal rules of avoiding coins with spots, I bought them all, spots on two be damned. It wasn't until I got home that my favorite has a hint of verdigris on the edge and a bit on the rim of one and in to small spots of the second nickel.
They are all well struck and no mush to the letters. Mistook the Verdigris for carbon and compounded the fact I over paid.
So may favorite becomes my biggest fear. I will inquire about both PCGS and NGC conservation services. Anyway, it will be fun to submit see how my personal GTG will turn out.
Also tracked down four nice XF grade Indian Head Cents. I am buying just about any VF/AU IHC found in the wild. They seem to hold their prices raw on Ebay and the dealer knocked off 30% for the package deal.
The 1883 will replace my AU example that I found last year which is a Snow 8 variety. Might go in for attribution. An 1888 seems to be a S-23. Followed by a 1901 and cleaned 1907 (Snow 2).
An 1858 Large Letter (Low Leaf) Flying Eagle caught my attention. Probably XF
Decided to leave because I was mentally drained looping coins. Some already said they were planning to leave.
Took off around 1PM for home and hit Maurice's BBQ for lunch. Bought a Pint of BBQ for the road along with Bannana pudding. Not a BP fan but their's is fabulous. So is the mustardy BBQ.
Worth the drive. This club seems active. Saw many of them last year in Augusta when I was passing thru while taking my wife home to visit her family. I think in a couple weeks there is an Aiken, SC Show.

Nice report! Sounds like some interesting items were found!
I wonder if these smaller shows are the ones where raw coins are more plentiful than at big shows. Maybe more of the old school collectors who can afford a table?
Augusta is May 18-19
Nice write up - sounds like a good show, and you found some nice coins.
Hopefully your nickels can be conserved to your satisfaction.
Thank you for the report. Always good to back off the computer and view coins in person.
Are you going, Daryl?

Nice report... and those are nice Buffs... the IHC's sound good too.... small shows are often a good source of raw coins.... and often they are raw not because they will not grade, but because some collectors/dealers just do not slab many coins... Cheers, RickO
I'm considering it, haven't decided yet.
Awesome...

Nice report! The Aiken club show is once a year in September.
